100% RECORD FOR MOUSEHOLE WOMEN AFTER DOMINANT WIN

Mousehole continued their outstanding start to the Cornwall Women’s League season with a sixth straight victory to remain in second place, three points behind St Agnes with two games in hand.

Wadebridge came into the match with only one win to their name and were shown no mercy on a wind-swept afternoon by the powerful hosts, who are the only unbeaten side in the league.

Jo Barker opened the scoring on 20 minutes, heading home Sophie Wilson’s left-wing cross from six yards. Five minutes later it was 2-0 when Katy Barker’s inswinging corner was helped into the roof of the net by a defender. A great move involving a superb one-two involving Emily Hardaker put Katy Barker in the clear down the right and her low cross was converted by Jo Barker at the far post for 3-0 on 35 minutes. A minute later, after clever work on the left of the penalty area, Carly Jacka crossed low for Jo Barker to back-heel the ball into Tamara de Silva’s path for 4-0. After 42 minutes, the fifth goal came as Sophie Wilson’s right-sided corner was tapped in by Leena Mannon from close range.

Mousehole continued to play the ball from the back with all members of the team involved, but the first notable action of the second half saw Lyndsey Mayers in the home goal injure herself after sticking out a foot to block a driven 54^th minute penalty, awarded after a rare defensive mix-up. Back came Mousehole, and Emily Hardaker grabbed the sixth goal on 64 minutes, running through the defence to slot a low shot into the far corner, and did the same on 71 minutes. Two minutes later she put Sophie Wilson in for a shot inside the far post for 8-0. Katy Barker at last got on the scoresheet running past the overworked defence on to a pass from Sophie Wilson on 81 minutes, and two minutes later it was double figures when Megan Davidson’s shot hit the bar and Emily Hardaker pounced for a 19-minute hat-trick. Sophie Wilson completed the scoring in the 88^th minute, siding a precise shot into the far corner after neat build-up play by Tamara de Silva.

Overall, the scoreline could have been even more emphatic but for the sterling efforts of the frequently exposed Wadebridge goalkeeper and the home side’s wasteful finishing, but manager Dawn Bateman will be pleased with the way her team retrieved and kept the ball and the fact that there were six different scorers on the day.

RESERVES WIN IN TOP-OF-THE-TABLE CLASH

Division 1 leaders Mousehole Reserves gained a vital win with a characteristically strong team performance on Saturday to extend their points advantage over the third-place visitors.

The spiralling south-westerly wind made ball control difficult for both sides for the entire game, but Hayle turned up intent on going away with all three points and to their credit provided a real test for The Seagulls.

Both sides played attacking entertaining football from the start, but the breakthrough came only in the last five minutes of the first half, when following a cross by Joe Davies from the left, the ball cannoned off a Hayle player for an own goal and 1-0 to Mousehole.

After the break Hayle came out really strongly, keeping themselves very much in the match with solid defensive and mid-field play to thwart Mousehole’s numerous attacks.

The hosts’ Michael Fitchett won a high ball just outside the edge of the Hayle box in a one to one situation with the keeper, but after being fouled before he could pounce on the loose ball in front of an open goal, the resulting free-kick came to nothing.

Joe Davies then hit the post following a corner, and Fitchett, injured in his earlier clash with the ‘keeper, was then replaced on 65 by Jamie Simons, who scored within five minutes to double Mousehole’s lead after good work from Chris Bullock.

Further probing attacks on the Hayle goal continued with Nathan Goodspeed, Jason Simmonds, Joe Davies, Lee Robinson and Tom Patrick all having shots to no avail. At the other end, Hayle were still a threat with continued attacks on the Mousehole goal, but a solid performance by Adam Robathan between the posts kept them at bay.

The result leaves Mousehole Reserves top with 23 points from 10 games, followed by Penwith Exiles in second place with 21 points from 9 games, and Hayle Reserves third with 15 points from 8 games.

SEAGULLS PICK UP THE POINTS IN HARD-FOUGHT ENCOUNTER

Mousehole came out on top in this bottom-4 battle on a very windy afternoon, with two second-half goals to continue their good run of form and results.

A scrappy first half was evenly contested but with few periods of quality football in difficult conditions, though both goalkeepers had to be at their best on several occasions.

Mousehole took the initiative in the second half and had the upper hand throughout, with Illogan only once threatening the home goal, a free kick from 25 yards fired harmlessly over by Dominic Bachelor on 88 minutes.

The home side took the lead in the 55^th minute when Connor Davey’s forward pass put Calum Elliot in marginally ahead of the visitors’ keeper Scott Attrill, whose challenge was punished by a penalty brutally converted by Matt McIlroy.

The scorer was again in the thick of the action just after the hour, when Illogan centre back Sam Emery’s over-aggressive tackle in midfield and McIlroy’s retaliation saw both players dismissed by referee Rowan Clarke.

Mousehole’s ten men asserted themselves better in the closing half-hour, increasing the lead on 72 minutes when Calum Elliot’s astute pass set up Bradley Wills to take the ball round the keeper and slot in to the empty net.

Attrill then came to Illogan’s rescue with two great saves, tipping Calum Elliot’s chip shot on to the bar on 76 and pushing over substitute Danny Park’s shot on 82.

Mousehole have now lost only once in the last eight games in all competitions, while this win was their fourth in a row and enabled them to climb up to 12^th place in the league table, level on 15 points with Dobwalls, Penzance and Elburton Villa whose games were postponed.

This coming Saturday (18^th), The Seagulls make the long journey to the east side of Plymouth to face Elburton Villa (3pm), with the hosts having an unexpectedly inconsistent start to the 2017/18 campaign after finishing runners-up to promoted Sticker last season.

This will be Mousehole’s last scheduled away game until 24^th February, as they enter a long series of home fixtures at Trungle Parc to compensate for the ground being refurbished and out of action for the first two months of the season.

The forthcoming home games include 11 in the League – starting with the visit of Plymouth Marjon on 25^th November, a Cornwall Senior Cup second round tie against Combination side RNAS Culdrose on 2^nd December (2pm), and a League Cup third round tie against Premier Division Launceston on 30^th December (2pm), not forgetting the much-anticipated Boxing Day morning ‘local derby’ against Penzance (11am).

MATCH PREVIEW – MOUSEHOLE v ILLOGAN RBL

This Saturday, Mousehole play their 12^th League fixture of the season – but only their second at home – lying in 14^th place against Illogan RBL who are two places and three points below.

The Seagulls have 3 wins, 3 draws and 5 defeats in the League so far, but have lost only once in the last 7 games in all competitions. Two of those wins have been against Premier Division Camelford 1-0 in the League Cup and table-topping fellow West Division local rivals Ludgvan 2-1 last Saturday in the Cornwall Charity Cup.

Illogan have won two and lost 7 of their 12 League games but have three away draws to their credit, at Elburton Villa, Holsworthy and Wadebridge Town. Last Saturday they lost 5-1 at home to Penzance in the Charity Cup.

Kick off is at 2:15pm, and is preceded by a schools’ ‘local derby’: Mousehole Primary School v Newlyn Primary School, at 1:00pm.

In West Cornwall’s ‘Match of the Day’, Mousehole and Ludgvan produced a typically hard-fought local derby in front of a large crowd of 153 spectators on a sunny but cool afternoon at the impressively refurbished Trungle Parc, with the hosts just edging through to the second round of the Cornwall ‘Durning Lawrence’ Charity Cup.

Mousehole came into the match lying in 14^th place in the West Division table, having played their first 10 games away, but with only one defeat in the previous six league and cup matches. Ludgvan on the other hand had made a sensational 10-game unbeaten start to their first season at this level after gaining promotion from the Cornwall Combination, and stood two points ahead at the top of the table with games in hand over the teams just below.

Extra interest was added to an intriguing-looking fixture as Mousehole had won 3-2 at Ludgvan in the League Cup first round back in September, in front of another near-150 crowd.

And just as in that previous cup match, Mousehole made another quick start, going ahead after only 4 minutes when Luke Johnson came inside from the right and placed a low left-foot shot just inside the far post from 15 yards.

Gerens James and Jamie Devine missed clear chances for the visitors before prolific scorer James deservedly equalised on 33 minutes with a clever looping header after Dan Magee’s right-sided free kick had been glanced on by Craig Wilcox.

The Seagulls came close when Jordan Adlard fired just over the angle from 30 yards, but it was The Hurlers who were creating the better chances, Jamie Devine heading wide again from a good position and Gerens James through on goal but thwarted by goalkeeper Steve Parker-Billinge’s diving save for a corner when a goal looked probable.

So it came as a surprise when Mousehole regained the lead on 44 minutes, albeit with a superbly worked goal. Recent signing Calum Elliot gained possession in his own half, carried the ball forward with great control and pace, and slid a perfectly-timed defence-splitting pass for the speedy Connor Davey to roll the ball calmly past the advancing Mike Flores for his first goal in a Mousehole shirt.

Ludgvan came very close to getting back on terms in the last action of the first half, SPB palming out a shot and the loose ball being driven across the face of the goal with Gerens James in close attendance.

In a second period with no further goals but plenty of near misses, Ludgvan’s direct play and strong running forced Mousehole into their best defensive performance of the season, typified by another flying save by SPB from Ross Duncan’s 25-yard drive, several blocks and interceptions at crucial moments, some exciting but unsuccessful breakaways of their own, and in a dramatic last couple of minutes, after Gerens James’ unchallenged 10-yard header from a corner had gone marginally wide, Billy Curtis played a true captain’s role as he threw himself in front of a great chance for the visitors to take the game into extra time.

After being knocked out of all three cup competitions at first-round stage (twice by Mousheole), Ludgvan can now concentrate on consolidating their position as League front-runners, with seven of the next nine fixtures at home, starting this Saturday (11^th) when mid-table St Dennis are the visitors to Fairfield (2.15 kick off).

Mousehole on the other hand still have an interest in the Cornwall Senior Cup, with Cornwall Combination side RNAS Culdrose at Trungle Parc for a second round tie on 2^nd December; the League Cup, with Premier Division Launceston the visitors in the third round on 30^th December; and the Charity Cup with the second round due to be played on 10^th February.

In the meantime, The Seagulls resume League action on Saturday (11^th) with a home fixture against second-bottom Illogan RBL (2.15). Then, after an away trip to Plymouth to face Elburton Villa the following Saturday, they have a sequence of 12 home fixtures stretching well into February.

MOUSEHOLE AFC ANNOUNCE NEXT STAGE IN THEIR FIVE-YEAR DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Mousehole AFC have announced the signing of 30-year old former Scottish Premier League striker Calum Elliot as player and full-time academy coach while also working alongside first-team manager Kevin Richards. Calum made 144 top-flight appearances for Hearts, Motherwell, Dundee and Livingston, being named Scottish Player of the Month three times, scoring 51 goals in a total of 234 games and representing Scotland 15 times at Under-20 and U21 levels. A UEFA ‘B’ coach, Calum was most recently the technical director of a major football academy in Canada.

Director of Football Jason Blunt said:

“I’m delighted to welcome Calum Elliot to the club. Having already spent some time with us, he’s seen first-hand the enormous potential in what we’re intending to achieve here, and is ready and able to make a major contribution both on and off the pitch.”

“We’re still in the early stages of our 5-year plan, but so many amazing things have happened already. Our Junior teams recently went to Yorkshire, playing both Leeds United and Sheffield United and having training sessions with league professional coaches, together with visits to Manchester United and Manchester City. Our new Endorsed Academy Youth teams – with more age groups getting off the ground in the near future – operate from our recently acquired excellent second ground, at Marazion, which has proved to be a major asset for training and fixtures. We’ve brought in Kevin Richards as first team manager with his unsurpassed knowledge of the footballing scene in West Cornwall and beyond. One of our Academy players, 19-year old Jorome Slew, is currently in his third week of trials with Championship club Barnsley.”

We’re going to be running an international soccer camp in partnership with a Pro club next year and also launching a new pro tournament – the Endorsed Cup – in the summer: more details to be announced later. MATCH PREVIEW – MOUSEHOLE v LUDGVAN

Mousehole are at home at Trungle Parc against local rivals Ludgvan in the first round of the Cornwall Charity Cup tomorrow, Saturday 4^th November.

Please note the kick off is at 2pm. There will be extra time and penalties to decide the tie if necessary.

This is the second Cup meeting between the two sides this season. Mousehole won 3-2 at Ludgvan on 16^th September in the first round of the SWP League Cup with a rare goal from captain Billy Curtis and two, including a penalty, from Jorome Slew, in front of a good crowd of 148. That victory earned The Seagulls a second round tie at Trungle Parc against Premier Division Camelford on 7^th October, and a 1-0 win saw them into the third round with another higher-division side Launceston the visitors on Saturday 30^th December.

Ludgvan are two points ahead at the top of the West Division table and unbeaten in the League since gaining promotion this season, with consecutive 9 wins following an opening-day away draw.

Mousehole are 14^th, with 3 wins, 3 draws and 5 defeats from 11 matches, having played only one of those at home, a 4-1 defeat of Dobwalls two weeks ago.

Last week Ludgvan beat second-bottom Illogan 3-2 at home, while Mousehole drew 3-3 at Plymstock United.

Cornwall FA have nominated The Invictus Trust – a small local charity focussing on adolescent mental health issues – as this season’s beneficiaries of the Charity Cup.

This is an intriguing local derby, Ludgvan with several ex-Mousehole players in their ranks and possibly starting as favourites based on their impressive results, and Mousehole gaining momentum with just one defeat in the last six games in all competitions and playing only their third competitive match at the newly refurbished Trungle Parc.

ENGLISH SCHOOLS NATIONAL INTER-ASSOCIATION TROPHY, SECOND ROUND

AT MOUSEHOLE AFC, TRUNGLE PARC, ON WEDNESDAY 1^ST NOVEMBER 2017

Mousehole AFC’s recently refurbished Trungle Parc HQ was the venue for this second round tie in the English Schools Football Association U15s national competition between West Cornwall and Plymouth. Both teams had received a bye in the first round.

Plymouth, who started as favourites, came out as 5-2 winners (3-1 at half time) in a match reduced to 35 minutes each way because of concerns about the fading light later in the afternoon.

Around 60 spectators were treated to a game of attractive and competitive football played by two sides demonstrating great technical skills and teamwork on a good surface following the pitch works over the summer.

Manager Kevin Lawrence was justifiably proud of the way his West Cornwall lads continued to pass and probe against some physically stronger opposition, with the main difference in the end being the power and speed of Plymouth’s two wide front players.

The players’ team sheets, and information about the English Schools Football Association and the West Cornwall and Plymouth District Associations, are in the attached four-page programme.

The boys LOVED playing at the ground and on the pitch which by the way was complimented by all the players, coaching staff, match officials and parents.

Can i just say thank you to hosting the game, sorting the food, refreshments etc is such a nice gesture which allows me as the manager to concentrate on the game. The parents having access to refreshments was a very nice touch indeed.

MATCH REPORT – PLYMSTOCK vs MOUSEHOLE

Mousehole came away from the far side of Plymouth with only a single point after conceding three goals from a winning position with less than half an hour to go.

And in similar circumstances to the opening-day 4-4 draw at St Dennis, The Seagulls had mixed feelings after seemingly securing all three points at one stage, while also being relieved to hear the final whistle as they clung on in the face of the hosts’ bombardment.

Mousehole, with four wins in the last five matches, were without Tyler Tonkin, Bradley Wills, Yeshe Briar, Jordan Adlard and Josh Otto, but included young Byron Wood at right back and welcomed former Scottish Premier League forward Calum Elliot to take up a midfield role. Plymstock came into the match having won their last three games after a poor start to the season.

Both sides created half-chances in an evenly-contested first half-hour, with Matt McIlroy coming close for the visitors with a left-foot shot on 27 minutes.

Mousehole went ahead in the 37th minute when a fast break down the right hand side led to Luke Johnson firing over after being partially tripped in the area, only for Referee Andrew Glanville then to spark a major talking point by awarding a spot kick. Matt McIlroy hammered in the opening goal from 12 yards, and three minutes later doubled the score by converting from close range after a short-corner routine involving Kevin Lawrence and Luke Johnson.

The Seagulls continued on top in the early stages of the second half, with Luke Johnson driving a superb 20-yard volley against the bar, and it was 3-0 after 52 minutes when Kevin Lawrence’s flighted free kick from just outside the left-hand corner of the box slipped in at the far post.

But just after the hour, Plymstock’s substitutions and changed tactics had instant impact with two goals in three minutes as the balance of the game shifted decisively, and a few minutes later only Steve Parker-Billinge’s close-range save kept Mousehole ahead. But the lead looked fragile as the buoyant home side put The Seagulls’ defence under pressure with every attack, and the comeback was completed with a penalty in the 85^th minute when Kevin Lawrence was adjudged to have committed a foul on the edge of the area.

Not content with the equaliser, Plymstock powered forward at every opportunity and came very close to an improbable winner in the 4^th minute of added time when a goalbound drive was diverted to safety via Liam Andrew’s knee.

Mousehole’s defence will face a similar challenge this Saturday (4^th November) when local rivals and unbeaten league leaders Ludgvan visit Trungle Parc for a first round tie in the Cornwall FA ‘Lawrence Durning’ Charity Cup, kick off 2pm, with extra time and penalties to decide the tie if necessary. Ludgvan will be looking to avenge their 3-2 home defeat to Mousehole in the South West Peninsula League Cup first round in September.

Mousehole’s other teams had a good weekend, with the Reserves knocking out higher-division Helston Athletic 3rds in the Cornwall Junior Cup, the Thirds beating Wendron United 4ths 8-0 in Trelawny 4, and Mousehole Women continuing their 100% record in the Cornwall Women’s League with a 5-0 home victory over St Teath.
