SATURDAY 14^TH APRIL, AT TRESEVEAN PLYING FIELD

 Mousehole Reserves celebrated achieving the first objective of their season – a win that assures them of promotion.  It’s an immediate return to the Premier Division from which they were unluckily relegated after a second half of last season was disrupted by Reserves having to fill First team shortages caused by a mass exodus of players.  They now require a maximum of three wins from their last four games to clinch the title.

Saturday’s win came on an overcast warm afternoon with a brisk breeze.  On an extremely soft pitch, the opening 15 minutes saw both sides trying to find openings in each other’s defence, but it was The Seagulls who managed to score first when Jamie Simons’ shinpad deflected a shot that was probably going just wide from J J Simmonds.  A second goal followed shortly afterwards when the ball trickled into the back of the net from a Lanner defender.  Some excellent defending from the back four, together with a hard-working midfield, succeeded in keeping the home attack at bay.  But Lanner continued to pressure and came extremely close to scoring their first, when a dipping and swerving free kick was superbly edged over the crossbar by keeper Jonathan Fitchett playing only his second game for Mousehole.  Good work throughout the first half from Chris Bullock in the centre and Jamie Simons down the left wing started to open up the Lanner defence, but without adding to the half-time score of 0-2.

Mousehole’s third and fourth goals came in quick succession following good teamwork across the pitch, with J J Simmonds and Jamie Simons doing the damage, both from inside the Lanner penalty box.  The hosts then broke through the Mousehole defence and deservedly scored their first of the afternoon, while shortly afterwards  Jonathan Fitchett in goal had to make another good save to prevent Lanner getting a second.  With 30 minutes left Mousehole made a series of rolling substitutions, and it was not long before captain Joe Davies found the back of the Lanner net with goal number 5 with a fine shot from just outside the penalty box.  Michael Fitchett came close to scoring number 6 from a one-to-one with the Lanner keeper who managed a finger- tip save, but shortly afterwards he delivered a fine cross into the box for Lee Robinson to hit goal number 6.   Mousehole continued to attack without being able to capitalise on their efforts, while Lanner continued to play positively and gained a penalty which they converted for their second goal.

The three points ensures promotion to the Trelawny League Premier Division at the first attempt, in an excellent season in which The Seagulls have lost only one League game – but there is still work to do in the remaining four fixtures to fulfil the second objective, which is to be promoted as champions.

Those four fixtures are all away:  This Saturday, 21^st, at Rosudgeon (2.30pm);  Monday 23^rd at Threemilestone (6.30pm);  Wednesday 25^th at RNAS Culdrose (6.30pm);  and finally Saturday 28^th at Hayle (2.30pm).

Penwith Exiles are the only other team that can challenge for the top spot:  they are 8 points behind with five fixtures remaining, four of which are away, so any points dropped will make The Seagulls’ task easier.

The total crowd number for this season’s three matches between Mousehole and Penzance is 682:

• 216 at Penzance v Mousehole League match on Good Friday
• 279 at Mousehole v Penzance League match on Boxing Day
• 187 at Mousehole v Penzance Charity Cup quarter final tie on 10^th February

The average is 227.

Mousehole’s average home attendance for League matches this season is 98.

The highest was the 279 on Boxing Day v Penzance, the lowest 55 against Illogan in horrible weather on 11^th November.

Two other matches attracted 100+,  Holsworthy (106) and Wadebridge (105).

Mousehole’s 98 is the 3^rd highest average home attendance in the Division:  top are Holsworthy (110) with six 100+ gates, second are Penzance (104).

Mousehole’s average of 98 is more than 50% higher than the Division’s average-per-game of 61.

Eight Premier Division sides have lower average home attendances than Mousehole.

Mousehole AFC confirm they have submitted an application for promotion from Division 1 West to the Premier Division of the South West Peninsula League.

The club were founder members of the SWP League 10 years ago, after playing since 1962 in the Cornwall Combination League, and have been continuous members of the West Division at Step 7 since then.

Already the geographically most western-based team in the West Division, promotion would involve the club in greater travelling distances into Devon, whereas at present the longest journeys are to Plymouth and West Devon.

Mousehole won the West Division title comfortably in 2015/16 but had already decided not to apply for promotion that season because of the need for further development of the club’s infrastructure and finances.

This season The Seagulls are in the top six in the West Division table, with an impressive run of form that has seen only one defeat since the end of September, together with a 100% home record.  Of the 14 remaining League fixtures, nine are at home and five away.

To be eligible for promotion from Step 7, the team needs to finish in the top-three and ahead of its fellow promotion applicants, and the club needs to demonstrate it can make improvements to the ground and facilities to meet Step 6 standards.

Explaining Mousehole’s decision to apply for promotion, Chairman Tim Richardson said:  “The club’s ambition is to play at the highest possible level and we launched a plan last summer to achieve just that, but in a sustainable manner.  A great deal of work has already taken place to strengthen the club’s infrastructure, and we have a schedule of works to bring the ground up to Step 6 requirements, as well as a process to put the necessary finances in place.  On the playing side we have a superb management and coaching set-up and an ideal blend of youth and experience, including players who have stayed loyal to the club in recent times, some of the best local players who have chosen to join us, and a promising crop of youngsters coming through the junior teams: they all deserve the chance to test themselves and develop their abilities at a higher level.”

Now into his sixth season as Chairman of The Seagulls, Richardson continued:  “Our supporters  – many of whom have been associated with the club in various roles for several decades  – will relish seeing their team competing with some of the best non-league teams in the south-west.  On the travelling side, some people might think we are too far away ‘on the edge of the map’, and of course there will be some longer journeys…..but we already do a lot of miles, so we can cope with the extra distances (right now, we’re looking into replacing our team bus, which will help!).  Looking at it another way, our location might give us a bit of an advantage when far-away clubs have to visit us!  So, after 10 years in the West Division, and with the superb support of the newly-established Endorsed Academy, we’re ready for the challenge of stepping up, in the belief that standing still is not an option, and you only improve by setting yourself higher standards.”

 RESERVES WIN IN TOP-OF-THE-TABLE CLASH

Division 1 leaders Mousehole Reserves gained a vital win with a characteristically strong team performance on Saturday to extend their points advantage over the third-place visitors.

The spiralling south-westerly wind made ball control difficult for both sides for the entire game, but Hayle turned up intent on going away with all three points and to their credit provided a real test for The Seagulls.

Both sides played attacking entertaining football from the start, but the breakthrough came only in the last five minutes of the first half, when following a cross by Joe Davies from the left, the ball cannoned off a Hayle player for an own goal and 1-0 to Mousehole.

After the break Hayle came out really strongly, keeping themselves very much in the match with solid defensive and mid-field play to thwart Mousehole’s numerous attacks.

The hosts’ Michael Fitchett won a high ball just outside the edge of the Hayle box in a one to one situation with the keeper, but after being fouled before he could pounce on the loose ball in front of an open goal, the resulting free-kick came to nothing.

Joe Davies then hit the post following a corner, and Fitchett, injured in his earlier clash with the ‘keeper, was then replaced on 65 by Jamie Simons, who scored within five minutes to double Mousehole’s lead after good work from Chris Bullock.

Further probing attacks on the Hayle goal continued with Nathan Goodspeed, Jason Simmonds, Joe Davies, Lee Robinson and Tom Patrick all having shots to no avail.  At the other end, Hayle were still a threat with continued attacks on the Mousehole goal, but a solid performance by Adam Robathan between the posts kept them at bay.

The result leaves Mousehole Reserves top with 23 points from 10 games, followed by Penwith Exiles in second place with 21 points from 9 games, and Hayle Reserves third with 15 points from 8 games.

Mousehole Women stand proudly at the top of the Cornwall Women’s League with three away wins out of three after their superb start to the season continued with a more-than-convincing win at Gala Parc on Sunday.

Within the first 15 minutes Mousehole had stormed into a 3-0 lead.  Katy Barker on the right did some particularly good work, assisting in all three goals.  The first was a pull-back from the bye-line for an onrushing Scarlett Clouter coming in from the left to strike into the bottom corner.  Megan Davidson then added two more quick goals before being replaced by Jo Barker.  Scarlett Clouter added her second and Mousehole’s fourth from a Barker corner, striking a sweet volley which rebounded into the net off the bar and the back of the Porthleven keeper.  Emily Hardaker opened her account for Mousehole tapping in at the near post after good work from Jo Barker.  Four changes saw Megan Edwards, Becky Edwards, Lena Mannon and Stacey George come on for the last 20 minuts of the first half.  Emma Hurworth then provided an assist heading the ball through to Sophie Wilson who strode forward from her own half, beating a couple of defenders and calmly placing a low shot into the corner of the net.

Lucy Brown, Emily Hardaker and Katy Barker returned in the second half with the game following the same pattern.  Megan Edwards scored her first goal in adult football, latching on to a loose ball after Sophie Wilson had been tackled in the penalty area.  Jo Barker then slotted in sister Katy’s rolled pass to make it 8-0.  Emily Hardaker scored her second after good approach play, and Megan Davidson completed her hat trick nodding in at the far post.  Scarlett Clouter then sored her own hat trick for 11-0, and Jo Barker scored an identical headed goal to Megan’s at the far past.  The 13th and final goal was a Sophie Wilson classic, a great strike from 20 yards.

Mousehole played good football throughout the game, with some defence-splitting balls creating chances for the speedy Katy Barker.  At the other end, goalkeeper Lyndsey Mayers was determined to keep a first clean sheet of the season, showing alertness to deal with the threat when the defence was caught out by a quick Porthleven free kick.  Lyndsey Williams and Emma Hurworth formed a solid partnership at the heart of the Mousehole defence,  and if one of them didn’t get the ball, the other one did.

Mousehole Women’s next fixture is on Sunday 22^nd October with a visit to Helston (2.30pm).
