Match Report – Holsworthy 23 Sept 2017

HOLSWORTHY 4-0 MOUSEHOLE

SATURDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER 2017

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE, DIVISION 1 WEST

AT UPCOTT FIELD

After the weather-affected postponement at St Blazey in midweek, The Seagulls, with two away wins in a row including an impressive performance in the League Cup at previously-unbeaten Ludgvan, took a depleted squad on their longest journey of the season in search of league points on Saturday, and came away empty-handed against an Holsworthy side showing signs of improvement after being sucked into the relegation mix last season.

Mousehole were without the services of Kevin Lawrence, Connor Davey, Yeshe Briar, Joshua Storey and new arrival Ralph Katikaza, but had newcomers Danny Park and Paolo Sousa in the starting line up.

The West Devon Magpies were gifted a simple goal after only 2 minutes when Williams’ attempted clearance bounced off the advancing attacker for a simple tap in.  It was 2-0 to the home side on 9 minutes when an angled free kick was headed up in the air for a far-post nod in from close range.  As the visitors were threatening to break back into the game, an unfortunate third goal arrived minutes before half-time after a misplaced pass in midfield had exposed The Seagulls’ defence.

Mousehole persevered in the early part of the second half without being able to penetrate a well-marshalled defence content to sit on a comfortable lead.  But after a couple of near-misses in the Holsworthy goalmouth, including a Bradley Wills swerving free kick that hit the crossbar, any further hopes of a comeback were cut short when captain Billy Curtis was forced off with a head injury after a brave challenge that earned James Dart only a yellow card for a dangerous-looking lunge.

The Seagulls played out the last 15 minutes with only 10 men after having used all three substitutes, and conceded again two minutes from time when another misdirected pass left a wide-open space for an easy fourth goal.

Mousehole’s next game is on this Sunday’s ‘Leeds United Day’ at the new-look Trungle Parc, when they play a friendly (2.30pm) against a talented young team likely to include some of the future stars of the Premier League.

Then on Tuesday (3rd) The Seagulls travel for a league fixture away at Wadebridge Town (kick off 7.30pm), followed by a blank day on Saturday 7th October with a bye in the first round of the Cornwall Senior Cup.

The following Saturday (14th October) Mousehole play this season’s first competitive home match on the new pitch when Premier Division Camelford visit for an intriguing League Cup second round tie.

Womens Match Report – Illogan 17th Sept 2017

ILLOGAN LADIES 1-3 MOUSEHOLE WOMEN

SUNDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER 2017 AT OXLAND PARC

CORNWALL WOMEN’S LEAGUE sponsored by Pirate FM

Mousehole Women made it two great wins from their first two away games at the start of a promising new campaign in which they aim to improve on last season’s commendable fourth-place finish.

It was another superb squad performance following the 5-1 hammering of Penryn Ladies the previous week, although Illogan – who took voluntary demotion from the higher South West League this season – started the stronger, constantly putting Mousehole under pressure down their left.

And it was no surprise when the hosts took the lead, working the ball into a shooting position following a loose pass out of defence.

Much to their credit, Mousehole soon hit back to equalise after some good work through midfield, enabling Sophie Wilson to hit a typical lofted shot from 25 yards out to beat the home goalkeeper.

After running tirelessly in defence, Lucy Brown was replaced by Nicola Richardson, who in turn was replaced by Scarlett Clouter 10 minutes later after injury.  In a tactical change, Katy Barker move out to the right with Megan Davison coming on up front.

The Seagulls started to take control and had chances to take the lead, although it was Illogan who came close to scoring again after a mix up in defence, but Flo Davies Kirsop did a rescue job by sweeping round the back to clear off the line and keep the half-time scoreline at 1-1.

In the second half Mousehole got a firm grip, with goalkeeper Lyndsey Mayers in the Mousehole goal hardly troubled, and carved out the win their play and spirit deserved.

A sweet pass-and-move pattern involving all the team set up Katy Barker to dash down the right and pull a low ball back for Sophie Wilson to put The Seagulls into the lead at 2-1.

Katy Barker made the game safe, adding the third goal when a defence-splitting pass put her through one on one with the keeper.

Next Sunday (24th) Mousehole Women face another interesting challenge with a visit to Gala Parc to take on Porthleven (2.30pm), whose only match so far was a 4-3 home win over Wadebridge.

Mousehole Women:  Lyndsey Mayers, Lyndsey Williams, Lucy Brown, Emma Hurworth, Flo Davies Kirsop, Beckie Edwards, Sophie Wilson, Claire Hitchens Todd, Carly Jacka, Emily Hardaker, Katy Barker.

Substitutes:  (Used) – Nicola Richardson, Megan Davison, Scarlett Clouter, Megan Edwards;  Unused – Rosie Davison.

Mousehole scorers:  Sophie Wilson (2), Katy Barker.

Match Report – Ludgvan 16th Sept 2017

LUDGVAN 2-3 MOUSEHOLE

SATURDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER 2017

AT FAIRFIELD

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE CUP, FIRST ROUND

SPONSORED BY WALTER C PARSON FUNERAL DIRECTORS

A good crowd of 143 witnessed an entertaining end-to-end local derby between two SWP Division One West rivals in the first round of the League Cup, with Mousehole securing a well-merited win to earn an intriguing home tie in the second round against Premier Division Camelford.

The recently-promoted Ludgvan side would have started as favourites, having made an unbeaten start to their first season at a higher level with five league wins out of six and already three points ahead at the top of the table.  The youthful Mousehole squad was still taking shape but gaining momentum with some impressive performances despite only one win – last Saturday – in the first seven outings.

The two local rivals meet before kick-off. Mousehole players (left to right in white and green): Kevin Lawrence, Bradley Wills, Connor Davey, Jorome Slew, Liam Andrew (partly hidden), Luke Johnson, Danny Mullarkey, Josh Otto (partly hidden) and Frank Katikaza. Ludgvan in their maroon away kit included several ex-Mousehole players, including Dan Magee (left), Jamie Devine (3), Wade Brown (10) and Max Davies (11).

Mousehole had centre-back Liam Andrew starting after a two-month injury lay-off and welcomed the experienced Danny Mullarkey and 19-year old Ralph Katikaza into their defence alongside Sam Schulberg in goal, with two more newcomers midfielder Matt Moody and striker Eze Amadi on the bench, but were missing Max Hill (unwell), Yeshe Briar (injured) and Lewis Caspall who has joined Penzance.

Any expectations that the game would proceed according to the form-book were quickly dispelled as The Seagulls started on the front foot with bright attacking football and stormed into a two-goal lead within five minutes before the hosts had time to settle.  Captain Billy Curtis came up from the back for a Kevin Lawrence corner from the right after 3 minutes and was first to the knock-down to scoop the ball in from six yards.  Two minutes later Jorome Slew sprinted between two defenders to latch on to a diagonal cross from Luke Johnson and place a cute lob into the net over the stranded goalkeeper.

Jorome Slew (centre-right) scores Mousehole’s second goal after 5 minutes, congratulated by Luke Johnson (7) who supplied the cross, with Bradley Wills (left, partly hidden) and Danny Mullarkey (right)

Ludgvan, wearing their maroon change kit, eventually came into the game and their direct play posed more of a threat as the half wore on.  Pulling a goal back in fortuitous circumstances when a driven right wing cross skimmed off the top of Liam Andrew’s head into the net for 2-1 on 30 minutes, they came close again within five minutes as Sam Schulberg denied The Hurlers’ regular goalscorer Gerens James with a one-on-one chance.

Ludgvan have made a habit of coming back to win when in arrears, so with the scoreline 2-1 in the visitors’ favour as the second half got underway the next goal was likely to be crucial.  And so it proved.

Early on, with Mousehole continuing with their confident passing style, Josh Otto headed over a great chance from Luke Johnson’s cross, but it was not until the 81st minute that The Seagulls went deservedly 3-1 up from a penalty scored by Jorome Slew – his 9th goal of the season, and ultimately the winner – after being felled chasing a loose ball on the right side of the box.

The Hurlers continued to get the ball up quickly to their forwards, succeeding on 89 minutes in bundling the ball into the net despite vigorous protests of hand-ball after hitting the bar from a corner, to set up a tense seven additional minutes, but The Seagulls’ resolute defence dealt with the bombardment comfortably to block out the hosts’ prospect of extra time.

Mousehole’s reward for this win is the opportunity to challenge higher-division Camelford in a home second round tie on October 14th.  After the re-opening of Trungle Parc with the visit of Leeds United on Sunday 1st October following major works over the summer months, the match against The Camels will be the first competitive fixture to be played on the ground this season, and promises to showcase the talents of two clubs focussing on youth development with several of the visitors’ team featuring in the successful Cornwall Under-18s squad.

Mousehole AFC announce Elite Player signings

Mousehole AFC’s policy of offering Academy places to youngsters from professional clubs has taken a step further forward this week.

Ex-Sheffield United youngster Jorome Slew, 19, first choice striker with The Seagulls since the start of the season, has recently been joined by 18-year old defender Max Hill from Leeds United and a talented 20-year old local midfielder Connor Davey signing on from Helston Athletic.

The trio have committed to the newly-created Academy for 16-23-year olds under Director Jason Blunt alongside a dozen or so local youngsters, with this group of players forming two-thirds of Mousehole’s First team match-day squad.  Designed to set new standards for young players in West Cornwall, the Academy, together with Youth team developments, is the backbone of the club’s long-term playing philosophy and strategy, which was in evidence in recent games with all but five players in the match-day squad aged 20 or under.

Jason Blunt – who managed the Leeds United Under-23s team before launching Mousehole Endorsed Academy in July – is a passionate advocate of giving youth its chance:  “These lads have had an impressive football education, playing at the highest level at their professional clubs.  It’s unfortunately typical that many of them, when released, tend to join a semi-professional non-league club, perhaps at Steps 1 or 2, train briefly once or twice a week, but then sit on the bench on match days.  We can do better than that.  If they come here, they will train and receive top-class coaching five days a week and get First team game time in men’s football.   While here they are responsible for setting new standards, mentoring of the younger players in the junior sides, refereeing their games, providing a role model for them to look up to, and helping to raise the bar with our other Elite Players.  They will not be paid by the club, but we’ll support them with their education and work opportunities along with all of our club members.  We are absolutely dedicated to promoting player development and if we can help any of our elite players progress and get signed up by a pro club, that will be a huge success!”

With more announcements imminent, the club is continuing to progressively build its leadership team and will also add one or two more playing staff, aiming for the squad to be fully assembled in time for the re-opening of the new-look Trungle Parc on Sunday 1st October  when Leeds United are the distinguished visitors.

Match Report – Bude Town 9 Sept 2017

BUDE TOWN 1-2 MOUSEHOLE

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE, WEST DIVISION

SATURDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER 2017

AT BROADCLOSE PARK

In a wind-swept encounter between two teams without a win this season, Mousehole recorded a hugely-deserved victory in the seventh of their ten consecutive away games before returning to the refurbished Trungle Parc in October.

The Seagulls were without the unavailable Bradley Wills and Lewis Caspall and the suspended Joshua Storey, but welcomed Liam Andrew back into the squad after a two-month injury lay-off, and veteran ex-Penzance goalkeeper Paul Williams as cover for the injured Steve Parker-Billinge, while Matt McIlroy having played in goal the previous Saturday at Plymouth Marjon started in his accustomed striker position.

Playing for the first time in their smart two-tone green away kit, Mousehole were the dominant force throughout the first half despite suffering an early misfortune when a wind-assisted corner was inadvertently headed into his own goal by Tyler Tonkin on 5 minutes.

Home goalkeeper Gary Dinshaw was the busiest man on the pitch,  single-handedly keeping his side in the game with half a dozen superb saves as his defence was repeatedly opened up by The Seagulls’ sharp passing and movement.

The long-awaited equaliser finally came on 43 minutes when captain Billy Curtis’ strong downward header from a right wing corner was half blocked on the line and Matt McIlroy was first to the loose ball to poke home.

The pattern of play continued in the second half, with the game played almost wholly in the hosts’ half and Paul Williams having a very quiet afternoon at the other end.  After a series of near-misses and more heroics by Dinshaw, Mousehole’s persistence was rewarded on 57 minutes when Jorome Slew’s movement on the edge of the box took away two defenders leaving Matt McIlroy the time and space to launch his second and ultimately the winner, a typical left-footed drive from 20 yards that cannoned into the net off the underside of the crossbar.

The visitors’ continued to put in an accomplished performance, threatening more goals and comfortably stifling any attempts by Bude to hit back.

Despite the narrow-looking scoreline there was ample evidence that Mousehole’s patient style is beginning to pay off, and confidence will be high ahead of the forthcoming fixtures.

On Saturday (16th) The Seagulls travel the short distance to newly-promoted top-of-the-table Ludgvan for an intriguing League Cup first round tie (2.30pm kick off, extra time and penalties if necessary, with the winners at home to Wendron United or Premier Division Camelford in the second round on 7th October).  They return to League action on Wednesday evening (20th) with a trip to recently-relegated St Blazey (7.30pm), followed by the long journey to Holsworthy on Saturday 23rd.

Mousehole:  Paul Williams (GK), Billy Curtis (c), Max Hill, Josh Otto, Kevin Lawrence, Tyler Tonkin, Yeshe Briar, Luke Johnson, Jorome Slew, Matt McIlroy, Connor Davey

Substitutes:  Ben Williams (for Tyler Tonkin, 54), Liam Andrew (for Josh Otto, 90+2), Louis Graham (for Matt McIlroy, 90+3), Ben Chapman

Mousehole scorer:  Matt McIlroy (43, 57)

Match Report – Plymouth Marjon 2 Sept 2017

After a 7-2 reverse at Liskeard Athletic the previous week, Mousehole produced a much-improved performance on Marjon’s 3G pitch and might have come away with the result they deserved but for two unforced errors in two minutes just before half-time.

The Seagulls’ squad, featuring seven players aged 20 or under, had striker Matt McIlroy in goal for the still-injured Steve Parker-Billinge, ex-Leeds United youngster Max Hill in central defence, and the versatile Connor Davey returning from a short spell at Premier Division Helston Athletic.  Missing from the team sheet were centre back Liam Andrew with a long-term injury, Lewis Caspall with work commitments, ex-Brentford Academy youngster Luke Dunn for family reasons, Finn Cross injured, and defender Ben Williams.

In an eventful first half showcasing two different footballing styles, Mousehole had the majority of possession as expected but were more creative and incisive than of late, with Bradley Wills just wide with a 20-yard shot, Connor Davey volleying against the bar from the edge of the box and Jorome Slew looking menacing with characteristic darting runs towards the danger area.  The hosts meanwhile played a more direct game, forcing McIlroy into two diving saves and hitting the post on one occasion.
