THIRD WIN IN SIX DAYS KEEPS THE SEAGULLS IN THE HUNT

MOUSEHOLE 2-0 BUDE TOWN

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE, DIVISION 1 WEST

SATURDAY 21ST APRIL 2018, AT TRUNGLE PARC

After wins on Monday at St Blazey and at home on Wednesday against Ludgvan, Mousehole were rewarded for their patience with two late goals and three vital points to stay near the top of the table against bottom side Bude Town on a hot sunny afternoon at Trungle Parc.

The visitors proved to be stubborn opponents who set out to stifle Mousehole’s progressive play in the final third of the pitch while offering no attacking threat of their own.  However, they showed enough determination to suggest that their upturn during the second half of the season – with five wins from 11 matches, including over title-chasing Ludgvan and St Dennis, to catch up with the sides above them  – might overcome their barren start to the season with 13 defeats in the first 14 games.  And even more to their credit, they made their longest journey of the season with just enough players for the 11 spaces on the team sheet, when it might have been easy to forfeit the fixture.

Mousehole fielded the same starting X1 as for the Ludgvan game and proceeded to dominate possession and create chances.  Luke Johnson had a goalbound volley cleared off the line on 12 minutes, William Vouama drove just past the post from 20 yards after a surging run on 20, another Johnson drive hit the post and zipped along the goal-line on 37, Ryan Holland was just too high with an 18-yard drive on 40, and Calum Elliot’s 30-yarder was parried by Gary Dinshaw in goal with Holland turning the loose ball over from 8 yards on the stroke of half-time.

The second period played out in the same manner.  In the space of seven minutes Dinshaw kept his under-pressure side in the game with two diving saves from Paulo Sousa and a block from William Vouama, but was nearly beaten by his own defender when Sousa’s cross was deflected into the side netting.  However, the long-awaited goal arrived in the 79th minute, Jake Andrew continuing his impressive scoring form by converting Luke Johnson’s low cross with a left-footed scoop into the roof of the net from 6 yards.  Johnson himself guaranteed the three points in the 90th minute when his volley on the far side of the 6-yard box from Kevin Lawrence’s left-sided corner was too strong for Dinshaw.

Mousehole have four League games left of which three are at home.  They now have a week before the first of these, against Millbrook next Saturday at Trungle Parc (3pm), with the result potentially having a decisive impact on the top positions in the Division.  Millbrook – who have lost only three league games so far – would on paper be the champions if they won their games in hand, but they still have a congested fixture list with eight games to play in 15 days, including on Monday at Wadebridge and at home against Dobwalls on Wednesday.

Mousehole v Bude Town:  Steve Parker-Billinge, Billy Curtis (captain), Liam Andrew, Calum Elliot, Josh Otto, Kevin Lawrence, Ryan Holland, William Vouama, Paulo Sousa, Luke Johnson, Jake Andrew.  Substitutes:  Steven Ziboth (for Ryan Holland, 60), Jordan Adlard (for Steven Ziboth, 79), Jamie Thomson, Paul Williams, Chris Prout.

Scorers:  Jake Andrew (79), Luke Johnson (90).

SEAGULLS EASE PAST LUDGVAN TO SET UP EXCITING RUN-IN

 MOUSEHOLE 2-0 LUDGVAN

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE, DIVISION 1 WEST

WEDNESDAY 18TH APRIL 2018

AT TRUNGLE PARC

Mousehole gained swift revenge for their 1-0 defeat at Ludgvan on Saturday with a more-comfortable-than-expected 2-0 win over The Hurlers in the return fixture, and in so doing moved up to fourth place among a pack of eight teams all vying for the League title.

Both teams fielded changed sides from Saturday’s encounter and both had been in League action only 48 hours previously.  But whereas Ludgvan had suffered a 2-1 defeat at St Dennis on Monday evening, Mousehole were buoyed by a superb 5-2 victory at fellow challengers St Blazey on the same night.  And The Seagulls’ game plan worked to perfection in the circumstances, an attack-minded first half delivering two goals, and a second period of patient possession football causing the visitors to chase the game in vain.

In front of another 100+ crowd on a bright sunny evening, Ludgvan were forced on to the back foot from the first whistle, goalkeeper Mikey Davies making an alert diving save on 8 minutes and a couple of dangerous crosses from the right fizzing across goal. Ryan Holland fired over from 15 yards on the end of a penetrating move on 21 minutes, but Luke Johnson deservedly put Mousehole ahead a minute later with a fierce lofted drive into the roof of the net from the right hand side of the 18-yard line.

Captain Billy Curtis came up from the back to double Mousehole’s lead with a rare goal on 34 minutes, heading home Ryan Holland’s inswinging right-sided corner at the near post – his second goal of the season, the first being also against Ludgvan in the 3-2 League Cup tie win at Fairfield on 16th September.

Flores made another good save from Luke Johnson’s shot in the 37th minute and Jake Andrew was just over with a close-range chance from Paulo Sousa’s left-wing cross, but after showing very little attacking threat Ludgvan sprung into life in the last few minutes of the half.  Wade Brown’s goalbound header from Dan Magee’s cross was kept out at full stretch by Steve Parker-Billinge in the home goal, Max Davies headed wide from the resulting corner, and Ross Duncan got on the end of another Magee free-kick but headed the ball the wrong way with Steve Parker-Billinge in no man’s land.

The expected Ludgvan blitz on the Mousehole goal failed to materialise in the second period, their only sight of goal coming when Wade Brown hooked over a difficult half chance from a corner.  The hosts were content to conserve energy by stroking the ball around the whole of the pitch, but still managed to create a good chance near the end when Paulo Sousa worked his way through but Flores’ block prevented a third goal.

Mousehole have five League fixtures remaining, of which four are at home.  They face bottom side Bude Town on Saturday (21st) at Trungle Parc with a 3pm kick off,  before a potentially decisive fixture at home a week later against rivals Millbrook, who so far this season have dropped the fewest League points and are the title favourites – on paper, at least.

During that same period Ludgvan have five fixtures to complete as they play ‘catch-up’ after earlier postponements, with home games on Saturday (Plymouth Marjon), Sunday (Dobwalls) and Tuesday (Penzance), followed by away games on Thursday (Elburton Villa) and Saturday (Liskeard Athletic).

Mousehole:  Steve Parker-Billinge, Billy Curtis (captain), Calum Elliot, Liam Andrew, Josh Otto, Kevin Lawrence, Ryan Holland, William Vouama, Paulo Sousa, Luke Johnson, Jake Andrew.  Substitutes:  Steven Ziboth (for Ryan Holland, 61), Jamie Thomson (for Calum Elliot, 71), Tyler Tonkin, Paul Williams

Scorers:  Luke Johnson (22), Billy Curtis (34).

HUGE COMEBACK WIN KEEPS THE SEAGULLS IN THE RACE

ST BLAZEY 2-5 MOUSEHOLE

SOUTH WEST PENINSUAL LEAGUE, DIVISION 1 WEST

MONDAY 16TH APRIL, AT BLAISE PARK

An eventful first match in charge for newly-appointed player-manager Calum Elliot saw Mousehole return to winning ways in the first encounter with St Blazey after their relegation from the Premier Division last season.

With both teams neck-and-neck in the top-six on 43 points. the hosts took the lead with a 45-yard goal, had a man sent off and then doubled their lead, before The Seagulls fought back from  2-0 down, putting in a dominant second-half display which included four headed goals and another hat-trick by top scorer Jake Andrew.

On a very bumpy pitch – which is also the venue for Mousehole’s first-ever appearance in the Cornwall Senior Cup Final on Sunday 13th May against Premier Division Saltash United – St Blazey took an early lead in improbable fashion when Lewis Coombes hoofed a wind-assisted lob from fully 45 yards after Mousehole had lost possession in the centre circle.

The fierce tackling showed how important a win was for both sides in the title race, but left-back Elliot Rendle did his side no favours as he earned an obvious straight-red card with a reckless high tackle on Luke Johnson half-way through the half, leaving St Blazey to play 70 minutes with ten men.

The pendulum swung the other way a couple of minutes later, when Liam Andrew was carried off with a knee injury after another crunching clash, to be substituted by Steven Ziboth.  And before Mousehole had time to re-organise, player-manager Stuart Morgan put his side 2-0 up on 31 minutes with a straight run through the defence and a cool chip as Steve Parker-Billinge raced out.

William Vouama gave Mousehole some hope on 38 minutes when he picked up a defensive clearance from Paulo Sousa’s corner and drove in a knee-high shot from a central position 30 yards out which swerved late to deceive goalkeeper Toby Chapman.

With their one-man advantage, The Seagulls took control of the second half, with fluent possession across the width of the pitch gradually wearing down their opponents.  It was 2-2 in the 51st minute as Ryan Holland’s long diagonal ball beyond the far post was headed back across goal by Steven Ziboth for Jake Andrew to nod home.

And Andrew put Mousehole into the lead for the first time with another header from the edge of the six yard box, Ziboth again the provider with an accurate cross from the left after 71 minutes.

Steven Ziboth made it 4-2 with a goal of his own in the 86th minute, this time getting a firm downward header from an angle on Paulo Sousa’s right-wing corner, with the ball squeezing in at the near post off Chapman’s legs.

And a remarkable turnaround was completed one minute from time as Jake Andrew, on his knees in front of goal, headed in a loose ball for his third close-range hat-trick in recent games.

The three points gives Mousehole fresh hope of competing positively in the promotion-seeking pack after last Saturday’s disappointing result and below-par performance at local rivals Ludgvan.  The Seagulls have the opportunity to erase that memory when the return League fixture with Ludgvan takes place at Trungle Parc tomorrow (Wednesday 18th April), kick off 6.30pm.

With Ludgvan losing 2-1 at St Dennis yesterday evening, Liskeard drawing at home and Millbrook v Elburton also finishing all-square, Mousehole’s win keeps them in contention near the top with six games to go and five of those at home, the last one of which is the return fixture with St Blazey.  There still remain a total of ten games in which teams at the top will face each other and therefore drop points, and although some teams have games in hand they also have greater fixture congestion.

Mousehole at St Blazey:  Steve Parker-Billinge, Billy Curtis (captain), Liam Andrew, Calum Elliot, Chris Prout, Jamie Thomson, Paulo Sousa, William Vouama, Ryan Holland, Luke Johnson, Jake Andrew.

Substitutes:  Steven Ziboth (for Liam Andrew, 24), Josh Storey, Paul Williams.

Scorers:

St Blazey – Lewis Coombes, 6 (1-0);  Stuart Morgan, 31  (2-0).

Mousehole – William Vouama, 38 (2-1);  Jake Andrew, 51 (2-2), 71 (2-3), 89 (2-5), Steven Ziboth (86, 2-4)

Referee: Tony Rogers.     Attendance: 70.

MATCH REPORT | Ludgvan vs Mousehole

LUDGVAN 1-0 MOUSEHOLE

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE, DIVISION 1 WEST

SATURDAY 14TH APRIL 2018, AT FAIRFIELD

In front of their biggest crowd of the season, Ludgvan got the win to put them firmly back in contention for the West Division title after a week in which they have taken 7 points from 9 against fellow top-six teams, while this 8th League defeat of the season casts some doubt on Mousehole’s ability to finish in a promotion spot.

The match was a fiercely contested local derby, with Ludgvan on the front foot in the first half followed by a committed defensive display to protect their lead.  In the end, Mousehole lacked the creativity and goal threat to capitalise on their superior possession, and home goalkeeper Mike Flores was required to make only a couple of serious saves.

Both sides had near-misses in the first half, but the crucial goal came in the 38th minute when Dan Magee’s expertly directed free kick from 30 yards was met by the unmarked former Seagull Max Davies who nodded a simple header from 12 yards over Steve Parker-Billinge into an empty net.

In the second half, William Vouama came close to an equaliser on 57 minutes with a shot just over the angle after good work with Steven Ziboth on the left, but Ludgvan’s defensive shield stood firm with resolute tackling and covering throughout, and restricted Mousehole to just two chances, Flores blocking angled shots from Luke Johnson on each occasion in the 78th and 79th minutes.

With a performance full of desire, Ludgvan avenged their two Cup defeats by Mousehole in the League Cup and Charity Cup earlier in the season.  Mousehole will have to improve considerably to gain anything from the return League fixture this Wednesday (18th) at Trungle Parc, kick off 6.30pm.  In the meantime, The Seagulls have another difficult fixture this evening (Monday 16th) at fellow top-6 side St Blazey (7.30pm).

Mousehole:  Steve Parker-Billinge, Billy Curtis (captain), Calum Elliot, Liam Andrew, Paulo Sousa, Jordan Adlard, Jamie Thomson, William Vouama, Luke Johnson, Jake Andrew, Steven Ziboth.

MOUSEHOLE RESERVES’ WIN GUARANTEES PROMOTION – NOW FOR THE LEAGUE TITLE!

LANNER 2-6 MOUSEHOLE RESERVES

TRELAWNY LEAGUE DIVISION 1

SATURDAY 14TH APRIL, AT TRESEVEAN PLYING FIELD

Mousehole Reserves celebrated achieving the first objective of their season – a win that assures them of promotion.  It’s an immediate return to the Premier Division from which they were unluckily relegated after a second half of last season was disrupted by Reserves having to fill First team shortages caused by a mass exodus of players.  They now require a maximum of three wins from their last four games to clinch the title.

Saturday’s win came on an overcast warm afternoon with a brisk breeze.  On an extremely soft pitch, the opening 15 minutes saw both sides trying to find openings in each other’s defence, but it was The Seagulls who managed to score first when Jamie Simons’ shinpad deflected a shot that was probably going just wide from J J Simmonds.  A second goal followed shortly afterwards when the ball trickled into the back of the net from a Lanner defender.  Some excellent defending from the back four, together with a hard-working midfield, succeeded in keeping the home attack at bay.  But Lanner continued to pressure and came extremely close to scoring their first, when a dipping and swerving free kick was superbly edged over the crossbar by keeper Jonathan Fitchett playing only his second game for Mousehole.  Good work throughout the first half from Chris Bullock in the centre and Jamie Simons down the left wing started to open up the Lanner defence, but without adding to the half-time score of 0-2.

Mousehole’s third and fourth goals came in quick succession following good teamwork across the pitch, with J J Simmonds and Jamie Simons doing the damage, both from inside the Lanner penalty box.  The hosts then broke through the Mousehole defence and deservedly scored their first of the afternoon, while shortly afterwards  Jonathan Fitchett in goal had to make another good save to prevent Lanner getting a second.  With 30 minutes left Mousehole made a series of rolling substitutions, and it was not long before captain Joe Davies found the back of the Lanner net with goal number 5 with a fine shot from just outside the penalty box.  Michael Fitchett came close to scoring number 6 from a one-to-one with the Lanner keeper who managed a finger- tip save, but shortly afterwards he delivered a fine cross into the box for Lee Robinson to hit goal number 6.   Mousehole continued to attack without being able to capitalise on their efforts, while Lanner continued to play positively and gained a penalty which they converted for their second goal.

The three points ensures promotion to the Trelawny League Premier Division at the first attempt, in an excellent season in which The Seagulls have lost only one League game – but there is still work to do in the remaining four fixtures to fulfil the second objective, which is to be promoted as champions.

Those four fixtures are all away:  This Saturday, 21st, at Rosudgeon (2.30pm);  Monday 23rd at Threemilestone (6.30pm);  Wednesday 25th at RNAS Culdrose (6.30pm);  and finally Saturday 28th at Hayle (2.30pm).

Penwith Exiles are the only other team that can challenge for the top spot:  they are 8 points behind with five fixtures remaining, four of which are away, so any points dropped will make The Seagulls’ task easier.

Mousehole Reserves v Lanner:  Jonathan Fitchett, Joe Davies (captain), Tom McGarry, Harry Tonkin, Jason Simmonds, Michael Fitchett, Chris Bullock, Jamie Simons, Matthew Howes, Tom Hooper, Nathan Goodspeed, Caleb Marsden, Lee Robinson, Josh Storey, Louis Main.

SEAGULLS HIT SIX TO KEEP THE PROMOTION DREAM ALIVE

MOUSEHOLE 6-0 WENDRON UNITED

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE, DIVISION 1 WEST

SATURDAY 7TH APRIL 2018, AT TRUNGLE PARC

Mousehole gained ample revenge for their 3-2 defeat at The Underlane in August with a comprehensive win over mid-table Wendron United, featuring a 15-minute hat-trick by Jake Andrew, and in so doing moved up to third place in the table.

The Seagulls made the most of home advantage in their 24th League match of the season, which leaves them eight games to play, five of which are at home including three against other top sides, and only five points separating the first seven teams.

Saturday’s game marked the start of a congested 30 days for the visitors, in which – as the team who have suffered the most from postponements in the Division – they have play 14 games to play, but to their credit they bounced back from this defeat to win 4-2 at Plymstock United the next day.

Mousehole took the lead in the 11th minute when Will Vouama advanced at speed down the left and his fierce left-footed shot from 15 yards was just too strong for goalkeeper Jack Mitchell.

Wendron had a couple of good minutes shortly afterwards, Scott Palmer shooting over from the edge of the box after a swift break, and then being thwarted by Liam Andrew’s last-ditch tackle in their next venture forward.

But apart from a floated cross which bounced off the top of the crossbar near the end, little was then seen of The Dron as an attacking threat as they were pressed back in their own half for much of the game, and Paul Williams, deputising for Steve Parker-Billinge in the home goal, could scarcely have had a quieter afternoon in the sunshine.

The Seagulls doubled their lead on 34 minutes, Paulo Sousa’s cross from the left being headed out to the edge of the area where Kevin Lawrence despatched a carefully-placed left-footed ‘daisy cutter’ inside the post.

Jake Andrew then was in the right place to notch a hat-trick, with all three goals coming from close range, the first on 59 after Will Vouama had opened up the visitors’ defence for Connor Davey to drive in a low cross, and the same combination worked again four minutes later to take the score to 4-0.  With The Seagulls well on top, goals looked likely with every attack, substitute Steven Ziboth having a shot blocked by Mitchell on 66, before Jake Andrew forced in number five for his three-in-a-row on 74.  Brother Liam came up from the back for a header cleared off the line on 76, Ziboth hit the post a minute later and then finally hammered the ball into the far corner from a tight angle after another dazzling run down the left with Kevin Lawrence the supplier.

Mousehole will have done their goal difference some good in a tight and competitive end-of-season, while at the same time their dominance could have enabled them to reach double figures.

Mousehole:  Paul Williams, Billy Curtis (captain), Calum Elliot, Liam Andrew, Paulo Sousa, Kevin Lawrence, Jordan Adlard, Josh Otto, William Vouama, Connor Davey, Jake Andrew

Substitutes:  Ryan Holland (for Jordan Adlard, 60), Yeshe Briar (for Calum Elliot, 64), Steven Ziboth (for C Davey, 64).

*Mousehole’s three teams in action over the weekend netted a total of 31 goals while conceding just three.

  • The Thirds, a newly created team this season, beat Goonhavern Athletic 9-2, with Kalon Mayes scoring a double hat-trick, to go up to second place in Trelawny League Division 4 with four games remaining.
  • On Sunday, top-of-the-table Mousehole Women recorded a 16-1 win at RNAS Culdrose, with Sophie Wilson grabbing seven of them, to maintain their slender lead over last season’s champions St Agnes, with the title likely to be decided by the outcome of the two matches yet to be played between them – the first of which is this Sunday (15th) at St Agnes, kick off 2.30pm.
  • Meanwhile, Mousehole Reserves, who were without a fixture last weekend, remain the leaders in Trelawny League Division 1, with an 8 point lead over Penwith Exiles with five games left to play, all of them away, starting with an away trip to bottom club Lanner this Saturday (14th), kick off 2.30pm.

*Mousehole AFC will be running supporters’ coaches to the Cornwall Senior Cup Final against Premier Division Saltash United – postponed on Easter Monday because of a waterlogged pitch at St Blazey – on the re-arranged date of Sunday 13th May at the same venue (2pm kick off), with departure times and pick-up places the same.  Previous seat bookings will remain valid, but any additional bookings or cancellations should be notified to Vice-Chairman Peter Robinson on 07802 903073.

*The Cornwall Charity Cup semi-finals – featuring Mousehole v Liskeard Athletic and St Blazey v Wadebridge Town – which were due to be staged this week, have been put back to mid-May to allow the completion of the backlog of League fixtures after a record number of weather-related postponements in the Peninsula League.  Dates and venues for the semi-finals are to be confirmed, and the Final will be played later in May.

*Mousehole AFC have announced that their end-of-season Awards Evening will be held on Friday 1st June at The Lugger, Penzance.

SEAGULLS MAINTAIN PROMOTION PUSH WITH ANOTHER VICTORY OVER THE MAGPIES

PENZANCE 1-4 MOUSEHOLE

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE, DIVISION 1 WEST

GOOD FRIDAY, 30TH MARCH, AT PENLEE PARK

The Good Friday morning ‘local derby’ saw Mousehole gain their third win of the season against their local rivals and in so doing secure the necessary points to maintain their position among the promotion challengers.

The Seagulls had beaten The Magpies twice at home, 2-0 on Boxing Day in the League and 4-0 in February in the quarter finals of the Cornwall Charity Cup, and this was another fiercely contested encounter.  A much-changed Penzance side – including ex-Seagulls’ Player-Manager Wayne Quinn returning after injury to play the first 45 minutes – came back strongly in the early part of the second half after trailing 2-0 at the interval.

Mousehole dominated the first half, taking the lead on 18 minutes when Will Vouama made a direct 40-yard run at the right side of the back-pedalling Penzance defence before striking a low left-footed shot into the far corner of Dom Angove’s goal.  The ‘keeper then kept out Luke Johnson’s shot with his legs in the 35th minute and Jake Andrew headed just wide four minutes later from Paulo Sousa’s flighted free kick.  But Andrew made no mistake on the stroke of half-time to double the lead deservedly with a downward header from six yards after a short-corner routine between Sousa and Kevin Lawrence had created the chance.

Penzance started the second period brightly, with Lewis Caspall’s inswinging corner marginally out of reach of Mark Vercesi in front of goal on 48 minutes, and ‘keeper Steve Parker-Billinge just able to deflect a dangerous low cross-shot past the post a minute later.  And they got back into the game on 66 minutes when Billy Curtis’ sliding tackle on Lewis Caspall was judged by Referee Luke Wilkes to be worthy of a penalty and the former Seagull despatched the spot kick despite Parker-Billinge getting a hand to the ball.

With the game now end-to-end and the tackles getting more determined, Mousehole had a flurry of close-range shots blocked on 70 minutes, Mark Vercesi drove in a 25-yard free kick kept out by Parker-Billinge’s dive two minutes later, and in the next action Referee Wilkes awarded a corner rather than a likely-looking penalty after Will Vouama’s jinking run through the home defence had been halted.

With Vouama injured in the tackle, Steven Ziboth came on as substitute and played a crucial role in Mousehole’s third goal, skilfully holding on to the ball on the left of the penalty area to set up Jamie Thomson for a low drive into the corner from a central position 18 yards out in the 79th minute, the experienced midfielder’s first goal for Mousehole since transferring from Helston Athletic.

And a well-worked move resulted in The Seagulls’ fourth goal on 86 minutes.  Calum Elliot and Kevin Lawrence’s quickly-taken free kick found Josh Otto in space, and the youngster’s flick inside the full back enabled substitute Chris Prout to send over a perfect cross from the byeline for Jake Andrew again in the right place to head home from six yards, for his fifth goal of the season against his former club after his hat-trick in February.

After the Cornwall Senior Cup Final against Premier Division Saltash United on Monday at St Blazey, Mousehole return to the same venue on Wednesday for an important League clash with the host club, followed by a home League match against Wendron United at Trungle Parc on Saturday (7th), kick off 3pm.  The following week sees the Cornwall Charity Cup semi-final against Liskeard Athletic on either Tuesday 10th or Wednesday 11th with the venue yet to be confirmed.

Mousehole v Penzance:  Steve Parker-Billinge, Billy Curtis (captain), Liam Andrew, Calum Elliot, Kevin Lawrence, Jamie Thomson, Josh Otto, Paulo Sousa, Luke Johnson, Jake Andrew, Will Vouama.

Substitutes:  Connor Davey (for Luke Johnson, 65), Steven Ziboth (for Will Vouama, 77), Chris Prout (for Paulo Sousa, 78), Paul Williams.

Scorers:  Mousehole – Will Vouama (18,), Jake Andrew (45, 86), Jamie Thomson (79);  Penzance – Lewis Caspall (66 pen)
