MATCH REPORT | Ludgvan vs Mousehole

LUDGVAN 1-0 MOUSEHOLE

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE, DIVISION 1 WEST

SATURDAY 14TH APRIL 2018, AT FAIRFIELD

In front of their biggest crowd of the season, Ludgvan got the win to put them firmly back in contention for the West Division title after a week in which they have taken 7 points from 9 against fellow top-six teams, while this 8th League defeat of the season casts some doubt on Mousehole’s ability to finish in a promotion spot.

The match was a fiercely contested local derby, with Ludgvan on the front foot in the first half followed by a committed defensive display to protect their lead.  In the end, Mousehole lacked the creativity and goal threat to capitalise on their superior possession, and home goalkeeper Mike Flores was required to make only a couple of serious saves.

Both sides had near-misses in the first half, but the crucial goal came in the 38th minute when Dan Magee’s expertly directed free kick from 30 yards was met by the unmarked former Seagull Max Davies who nodded a simple header from 12 yards over Steve Parker-Billinge into an empty net.

In the second half, William Vouama came close to an equaliser on 57 minutes with a shot just over the angle after good work with Steven Ziboth on the left, but Ludgvan’s defensive shield stood firm with resolute tackling and covering throughout, and restricted Mousehole to just two chances, Flores blocking angled shots from Luke Johnson on each occasion in the 78th and 79th minutes.

With a performance full of desire, Ludgvan avenged their two Cup defeats by Mousehole in the League Cup and Charity Cup earlier in the season.  Mousehole will have to improve considerably to gain anything from the return League fixture this Wednesday (18th) at Trungle Parc, kick off 6.30pm.  In the meantime, The Seagulls have another difficult fixture this evening (Monday 16th) at fellow top-6 side St Blazey (7.30pm).
