MATCH REPORT: MAWNAN RESERVES 2-5 MOUSEHOLE RESERVES

MAWNAN RESERVES 2-5 MOUSEHOLE RESERVES

TRELAWNY LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

SATURDAY 9TH DECEMBER 2017

AT CARWINION ROAD, MAWNAN SMITH

Mousehole Reserves had a reduced squad for this match at 5th place Mawnan Reserves, but notched up another valuable victory to go two points clear at the top of the Trelawny League Division 1 table.

The inclement weather had made the pitch very wet and heavy, with both sides finding ball control on the ground extremely difficult.

Mousehole went ahead on 13 minutes when Michael Fitchett’s pass from the right wing found Jason Simmonds whose run into the penalty area was blocked illegally, resulting in Chris Bullock coolly depositing the penalty into the back of the net.

Both sides persisted in battling down the centre on the pitch, where it was very heavy- going, but some excellent defensive play and strong mid-field challenges kept the hosts at bay, with Mousehole’s debutant ‘keeper Jonathan Fitchett also bringing off a series of fine saves.

A great run by Chris Bullock on the half-hour mark through the Mawnan defence saw his shot well saved by the keeper, but Jamie Simons was on hand to slot the ball into the unattended goal for a 2-0 scoreline.

After 20 minutes into the second half Chris Bullock shot against the post and that man again Jamie Simons was again on hand again to score Mousehole’ third and his second of the afternoon.

A few minutes later, another Chris Bullock run and an unselfish pass enabled Jamie Simons to claim his hat-trick and put Mousehole 4-0 ahead.

With about 15 minutes remaining the referee made a decision to sin-bin Matt Howes, which reduced Mousehole down to 10 men.  Mawnan took full advantage and within minutes a shot just out of reach of the Mousehole keeper floated into the net.  And shortly afterwards another goal arrived to make it 4-2, but solid defensive play by Joe Davies and Tom McGarry and the experience of Harry Tonkin ensured that the score-line would not increase.

The mid-field ‘power house’ of Nathan Goodspeed, Jason Simmonds and Lee Robinson continued to work relentlessly, and with 5 minutes to go and Mousehole restored to 11 men after the ‘temporary dismissal’, a through ball put Jamie Robinson one-on-one with the ‘keeper, and although his shot was superbly saved he was first to the rebound to score calmly for the team’s fifth and final goal.

Squad:  Jonathan Fitchett, Joe Davies (captain), Lee Robinson, Harry Tonkin, Jason Simmonds, Nathan Godspeed, Michael Fitchett, Chris Bullock, Jamie Simons, Jamie Robinson, Matthew Howes, Ben Fewkes, Tom Hooper

Scorers:  Chris Bullock (pen), Jamie Simons (3), Jamie Robinson

Next fixture: Next Saturday (16th December) versus 3rd place Penwith Exiles at Mounts Bay Academy, 2.30pm.  Penwith Exiles have been docked three points for fielding an ineligible player in their “win” at Hayle Reserves last week.
