Summary

Mousehole put in a hugely improved performance as they recorded a resounding win over fellow-promoted Cornish side Millbrook, to end an unfortunate period in which they have suffered four consecutive defeats and a Covid outbreak among the squad.

Pre-match points

Mousehole and Millbrook have almost identical League records so far this season, each with one win, one draw and three defeats, with Millbrook having the edge with a marginally better goal difference. So today’s match could be a tight affair.

Both sides were knocked out of the FA Cup at home in the Preliminary Round against higher-ranked visitors, Plymouth Parkway and Willand Rovers (in a replay), respectively, of the Southern League.

A month ago Mousehole won 2-0 at Millbrook with goals by Callam Mconie and Tallan Mitchell, so a win today would make it an early ‘double’.

Mousehole have new signing Jacob Grange from Wendron United among the substitutes, while Sean Roberts starts after injury but Josh Otto is still sidelined.

As it happened – key moments of the match

2 minutes: A bright start for Mousehole – Callam Mconie drives into the side netting from an angle on the right

4 minutes: GOAL FOR MOUSEHOLE. Mark Goldsworthy puts a quick short pass into space for TALLAN MITCHELL to turn 25 yards out, slalom swiftly and with great balance through the defence, and round the keeper to slot the ball calmly into the net. Mousehole 1-0 Millbrook.

11 minutes: GOAL FOR MOUSEHOLE. An excellent passage of control and movement ends with Callam Mconie putting in a low cross from the right towards the near post where MARK GOLDSWORTHY gets ahead of his marker to side-foot home from six yards. Mousehole 2-0 Millbrook.

15 minutes: GOAL FOR MOUSEHOLE. Quick passing out from the back outstrips the visitors’ midfield, enabling Hayden Turner to race down the left, cut inside and drive a right-footed shot in from 18 yards – keeper Ashley Clelland gets down to push the ball out but CALLAM MCONIE shows great anticipation to get to the loose ball first and score from eight yards. Mousehole 3-0 Millbrook with a quarter of an hour gone.

18 minutes: Nearly a fourth goal as Paulo Sousa dashes down the left and puts the ball in front of goal – but it’s just out of reach of Mark Goldsworthy and Callam Mconie

25 minutes: Hayden Turner repeats his earlier move, making a long run down the left and coming inside on to his right foot, with his low shot zipping past the far post

26 minutes: More attacking from The Seagulls, Callam Mconie picking up a misplaced Millbrook pass and shooting wide of the near post from 18 yards with keeper Clelland motionless

33 minutes: GOAL FOR MILLBROOK. JAKE FOSTER takes advantage of an unusual amount of space at the near post to head home a right sided corner

35 minutes: The goal has given Millbrook a lift – they’re starting to enjoy more possession with some neat play

40 minutes: GOAL FOR MOUSEHOLE. Tallan Mitchell and Hayden Turner open up the centre of the visitors’ defence, the ball is half cleared and MARK GOLDSWORTHY shows his goal poaching pedigree with an expert touch and a calm finish from eight yards

45+1 minutes: Half time, Mousehole 4-1 Millbrook. A five-goal value-for-money first half (from a Mousehole point of view!)

Second half – opening 15 minutes: Millbrook are defending in numbers, effectively denying the hosts any way through

61 minutes: An energetic long run by Millbrook’s left wing-back Sam Morcom ends with a shot that doesn’t have enough power to trouble Cory Harvey in the home goal

62 minutes: Callam Mconie has an opening in a central position inside the visitors’ box on his favoured left foot, but superb defending blocks the shot and it goes out for a corner

65 minutes: An almost identical repeat of what happened three minutes ago!

66 minutes: GOAL FOR MOUSEHOLE. Hayden Turner passes a left-sided corner to TALLAN MITCHELL lurking unmarked 20 yards out – he shifts it onto his right foot and places a perfect curler inside the far angle, giving the keeper no chance. Mousehole 5-1 Millbrook.

71 minutes: Mousehole substitute – Paulo Sousa is replaced by Kyle Fraser in the left wing-back position

72 minutes: Close to a Goldie hat-trick, as Callam Mconie makes a surging run to the byeline on the right, but a last ditch defensive toe-poke prevents the striker from converting the cross at the near post

73 minutes: Ashley Clelland goes full length to beat out Hayden Turner’s 20-yard drive

76 minutes: Mousehole substitute – Sean Roberts is replaced by Steve Burt in midfield

80 minutes: Mousehole substitute – Callam Mconie is replaced by newcomer Jacob Grange on the right

82 minutes: Millbrook create a threatening-looking attack – it’s Sam Morcom again up from the back to drive the ball low and not far wide of the far post from the edge of the area

85 minutes: Millbrook still in positive mood – they get two corners in a row but nothing comes of them

89 minutes: And again, Millbrook mount a quick break with Mousehole adrift upfield – Rik Shepherd’s tireless running gives him a shooting chance from 18 yards which is deflected for a corner

90 minutes: Sam Morcom goes on another left-sided raid and his low cross into The Seagulls’ danger area is cleared

90+1: Full time, Mousehole 5-1 Millbrook.

Mousehole team sheet (with used substitutes): Cory Harvey (GK), Billy Curtis (captain), Mark Richards, Jamie Devine, Paulo Sousa (Kyle Fraser), Sean Roberts (Steve Burt), Tallan Mitchell, Andy Elcock, Callam Mconie (Jacob Grange), Mark Goldsworthy, Hayden Turner. Post-match points

Mousehole out of a rut and back to doing what they do best. Millbrook working hard despite the deficit and ending the match with credit.

The win gives Mousehole a 100% record against Cornwall opponents so far this season, with an FA Cup win against Helston Athletic and now a ‘double’ against Millbrook. This will be put to the test on Wednesday 6th October with a League visit to Saltash United.
