FROM BLUEBIRDS TO SEAGULLS – MOUSEHOLE SIGN 18-YEAR OLD DEFENDER FROM CARDIFF CITY

by Pablo Woolls-Blanco

Mousehole have completed their third signing of the summer, picking up 18-year-old centre-back Morgan Lewis, who was released from Championship club Cardiff City this summer.

Lewis comes all the way from Treorchy, Rhondda Valley in South Wales, but will now be based locally, ahead of an exciting first campaign in the Southern League for Mousehole.

The Welsh ball-playing defender impressed on his debut for the Seagulls in a 3-0 win against Hayle on Saturday afternoon and will now be relishing the challenge of facing League One side Exeter City at Trungle Parc on Tuesday night and Dorking Wanderers the following Saturday.

Morgan spoke to us after his drive down from Cardiff on Saturday:

“First of all I’m buzzing to be here. I just think that at this point in my career it’s a good move for me. I can get loads of experience from men’s football and at a good level.”

On difficulty of leaving Cardiff City after 12 years at the club:

“Well it was a bit tough. It’s my boyhood club really. But I thought I may as well take the jump and explore different options and see where this takes me and hopefully it develops me into a better player.”

On his style of play as a defender:

“I like to play on the ball – breaking lines, switching play. I’m strong in the tackle and good in the air and I think I’ll bring a lot to this team for the season.”

Manager Jake Ash expressed his delight and excitement at signing the Welshman:

“As soon as I saw Morgan I knew he was a player who’d suit us. He has fantastic quality on the ball and a really good level of aggression in his duals. He’s only 18 so he’s still got loads of development ahead and I’m really chuffed he’ll be doing it here with us.”

Ash’s thoughts on Lewis’ debut against Hayle on Saturday:

“I thought Morgan was outstanding. He showed all the quality we knew he would bring. He’s a great passer of the ball – he’ll bring us a lot.”
