SUPERB SEAGULLS SO CLOSE TO WIN OVER HIGHER-DIVISION ‘BLUES’

MOUSEHOLE 1-1 HELSTON ATHLETIC

PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY, TRUNGLE PARC, TUESDAY 7TH AUGUST 2018

Mousehole put in arguably the best performance of their pre-season programme involving four higher-division sides with a great all-round display against a Helston Athletic side aiming to improve on last season’s highly creditable 9th place finish in the SWPL Premier Division.

It was an entertaining and competitive game, with both teams including new signings, triallists and youngsters, and playing contrasting styles of football.  Mousehole’s greater ball-winning and possession created more goal chances and with better composure in the final third they would have recorded a deserved victory.

Winger Steven Ziboth caused Helston major problems throughout the game, his partnership with Paulo Sousa on the left providing regular opportunities to run at defenders and use his explosive pace.  He laid on the opening goal on 20 minutes with a characteristic burst to the byeline and a low cross which was touched in by the well-positioned Jake Andrew for one of his trademark goals from inside the six-yard box.

The Seagulls continued to look the more likely to score up until the hour mark, when a series of substitutions by the visitors enabled them to add more goal threat to their direct approach.  And it came as little surprise when youngster Alex Wharton darted through the middle to latch on to another long ball to equalise in the 70th minute.

To their immense credit Mousehole showed huge resolve to withstand the expected Blues onslaught in an end-to-end last 20 minutes and indeed had the patience and positivity to fashion the better of the late chances.

Helston’s renowned manager Steve Massey was full of praise for Mousehole’s skill, application and teamwork – as well as the performance of his youngsters as they prepare for their opening game of the Premier Division season on Friday evening at home to Sticker.

Meanwhile player-manager Calum Elliot takes his new-look Seagulls’ squad to local Cornwall Combination League side Pendeen Rovers at Borlaise Park for their last pre-season friendly this Friday (6.45pm).

Mousehole’s SWPL Division One West campaign starts on Saturday 18th August when Plymstock United visit Trungle Parc (3pm), with free entry to all-comers for this first match of the season.

HUGE SUCCESS FOR NEW ENDORSED CUP AT MOUSEHOLE AFC

Several hundred spectators descended on Trungle Parc last weekend for a great exhibition of competitive football played the modern way, as the inaugural Endorsed Cup tournament got off to a flying start, featuring the talented under-18 youngsters from Newcastle United, Huddersfield Town and Bolton Wanderers, together with hosts Mousehole AFC.

Newcastle United proved too strong for Huddersfield Town in the opening match on Friday afternoon, as The Magpies won 4-0 with a composed performance to reach Saturday’s Final.

On Friday evening Bolton Wanderers defeated Mousehole 4-1 with a scintillating display of creativity and speed, Steven Ziboth grabbing a late consolation goal for The Seagulls from the penalty spot.

Less than 15 hours later, Mousehole were back in action against Huddersfield Town in the Saturday morning third-place contest, gaining a somewhat unexpected but highly creditable 2-0 win with another Steven Ziboth goal and a second from a trialist striker.

The showpiece Final on Saturday afternoon saw Bolton Wanderers pick up the handsome Endorsed Cup by overcoming Newcastle United 3-0 in another brilliant 90-minutes of spellbinding football, impressively orchestrated in midfield by influential captain Luca Connell – surely a name that will come to prominence in future years.

The visiting teams were chaperoned by members of the Mousehole committee and enjoyed visits to some of the West Cornwall attractions.  The teams’ coaches and managers said they were delighted to play their part in a first-ever tournament of its kind in Cornwall, and viewed the tournament as a valuable opportunity for the youngsters to bond together as they spent time together away from their home areas and play in a genuinely competitive tournament.

For Mousehole’s player-manager Calum Elliot, this was a useful exercise in assessing his promising new squad and developing The Seagulls’ trademark passing style, as the preparations gather pace for the new SWPL West Division season, which starts with a home match against Plymstock United on Saturday 18thAugust.

whats the endorsed academy

What is the ENDORSED ACADEMY AND ELITE PROGRAMME??

We have recently received a lot of interest in, and some questions about, the Endorsed Academy, and are delighted to have the opportunity to provide this update.

Firstly: Endorsed Academy.  The Endorsed Academy is a business set up a year ago, working in partnership with Mousehole AFC, with the purpose of investing in the development of Cornish grassroots football and sport.  Its focus is to raise the coaching standards and opportunities for the Cornish youth, through education, programmes, coaching and even developing the Fly Football Philosophy a style of football broken into age related sessions  designed by ex-elite coaches from pro clubs like Leeds United, the Scottish FA and many other top-class sources.  the philosophy is adopted across all of our coaching and education platforms.  The Endorsed Academy is right at the start of an exciting long journey.

All of the ‘Endorsed Academy’ plans have also been shared and discussed with the Cornish FA’s Governance Manager Richard Pallot and as recently as the Senior Cup Final we had a detailed face-to-face conversation with Richard who has confirmed “we meet all regulatory expectations” as an affiliated club.

In our first season, Mousehole AFC and Endorsed Academy, adopting the tagline ‘FlyingAllTogether’, have worked hard together to progress.  Starting from scratch last season we are aiming to have over 20 teams for next season.  The response from players and parents has been overwhelmingly positive.  Nike have awarded us the only Nike Partner Status Club in Cornwall and totally support our vision, which provides an amazing opportunity for our commercial partners and sponsors to get brand association with the footwear giant.  Incredibly, our junior players have already been involved in weekend coaching sessions and mini-tournaments at Manchester City, Leeds United, Barnsley, Sheffield United and most recently Galway in Ireland…and there will be many more such opportunities to come.  Next month (July 20th and 21st) also sees a new annual pre-season tournament at Trungle Parc – the Endorsed Cup, involving Newcastle United, Huddersfield Town, Bolton Wanderers and Mousehole.

Secondly: our Elite Programme.  At the start of the season we worked with the County FA to establish the name Elite Programme (EP) for 16-23 year-olds.  We recognise this is a big development area in the County, which aims to provide stronger pathways and to keep those players interested in Cornish football.  We appreciate this will take time, which is why we are developing a 20-year plan.

In our EP, we provide exceptional coaches, including highly qualified pro coaches and ex-pro players, with daily training available FREE to players aged between 16 and 23.  We also provide nutrition advice, GPS Analysis, personal & technical development plans, as well as physical, speed, balance and endurance training for optimum player performance.  For clarification, this is not an ‘EPPP’, as that is a term used at pro clubs.

In short, we are a grass roots club that provides pro-standards of training and environment to better serve our community and create a brighter sporting future for our kids.

We have started well, not everything has been perfect, but we are totally focused on continually setting higher standards as we move forward.  We are fully committed to improve rapidly from Good to Great, and to fly far far higher!

We will publish updates on our progress at appropriate times, and will maintain our policy of not publicly reacting to speculation or commenting on others.  We would like to thank many local clubs for their continued interest in the Endorsed Academy and our plans.

We wanted to take this opportunity to express appreciation to the 40 or so volunteers who are helping to make all this possible.  We also recognise and applaud the successful collaboration with local schools and college in welcoming Endorsed and the Fly Football philosophy, the wholehearted way in which the West Penwith community are getting involved with us, and the valuable support we have received from the FA.  We are also immensely proud of the close partnership we have with the RNLI as our main charity partner – it’s incredibly close to the heart of everyone associated with our club, Mousehole Village and the wider community.

Calum Elliot season preview 18/19

CALUM ELLIOT READY TO TAKE MOUSEHOLE TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Mousehole AFC’s player-manager Calum Elliot has had an active summer planning the development process and approach for next season’s assault on the SWPL West Division title.

The former Scottish Premier Division star, who led The Seagulls last season, with the team subsequently winning the Cornwall Charity Cup and finishing only a couple of points short of a promotion place, is relishing the prospect of doing even better this campaign.  “I’m buzzing with anticipation of what we’re truly capable of achieving.  We’ve already established a clear and strong playing philosophy, and learning from last season we are excited to set new higher standards as we move forward.  The summer’s planning has been focused on working with our coaching team, developing the philosophy, and now concentrating a huge amount of technical work to develop our attacking creativity and ways of exploiting the final third.  We are looking forward to gearing up for a fantastic season.”

Mousehole AFC wish Calum and the players all the best for the coming season.

DERYK HEYWOOD BECOMES GENERAL MANAGER OF MOUSEHOLE AFC AND ENDORSED ACADEMY

In a significant development Mousehole AFC have appointed Deryk Heywood –  Chairman of Porthleven AFC – to the role of General Manager.  He will be responsible for both developing the commercial model of the club, working closely with its Endorsed Academy, while also driving forward the increasing number of developments at a local level.

Deryk Heywood who re-located to West Cornwall over 40 years ago explained his decision to move across to Trungle Parc:  “I’ve been at Porthleven for several years and made many good friends, and this last season was our best in the League for ten years. So its been a big decision to leave.  But the opportunity to be involved in something unique, with such huge ambition, energy and vision at Mousehole AFC, and joining the growing leadership team of the club, was simply too good to miss. Its incredible to see a club that is engaging so deeply with its community, schools, the RNLI and beyond – its fantastic.”

Deryk went on to explain his involvement with local football and how he was returning to a club very close to his heart.  As a former local player, which included an interesting stint at Mousehole – Deryk is no stranger to the West Cornwall football scene, and has many fascinating stories to tell.  “My first ever game of football in Cornwall was for St Just Youth team in 1974.  I then played in goal for Herland Rangers in the West Penwith League from 1975 and eventually joined Mousehole, where I have some fantastic and actually very emotional memories.”

“So, as you can imagine, I’m massively looking forward to returning to Mousehole, this time in a different capacity and applying myself to ensuring that both the club and Endorsed Academy achieve their vision and goals.”

The club would like to wish Deryk every success in his new role and welcome him to the team.

SEAGULLS CELEBRATE HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL SEASON

Over 100 Seagulls’ players, partners and supporters attended The Lugger Inn, Penzance, on Friday 1st June to celebrate a highly successful season for the club as a whole.

The opening presentation by Ezra Chapman referred to the many successes on the playing side. The First team finished 4th in the South West Peninsula League West Division as well as winning the Cornwall Charity Cup and reaching the Cornwall Senior Cup for the first time in the club’s history.  The Reserves were promoted to the Trelawny League Premier Division as champions of Division 1, with only one defeat and a record-breaking 100% away record.  The newly-established Thirds finished in fourth place in Trelawny League Division 4 with a team assembled only at the start of the season.  Mousehole Women recorded their highest-ever position as they came runners-up in the Cornwall Women’s League, beaten only by champions St Agnes.

In terms of infrastructure, the club had quadrupled the number of teams to 13, including nine youth teams, and trebled the number of registered players.  Improvements had been made to Trungle Parc, planning permission was in place for floodlights and the ground now met the standards of the League above.  Many other developments were in the pipeline as the club continues into an era of significant change.  The Committee had been strengthened and there are up to 35 volunteers who regularly contribute their time and expertise to the running and further development of the club.

SEAGULLS SPARKLE IN TROPHY TRIUMPH

MOUSEHOLE 5-0 WADEBRIDGE TOWN

CORNWALL FA ‘DURNING LAWRENCE’ CHARITY CUP FINAL

FRIDAY 25TH MAY 2018, AT PENRYN ATHLETIC AFC

Mousehole finished off their season with a performance of style and power – and goals to grace any Final – to lift the Charity Cup with a convincing 5-0 scoreline for the second time in three years.

The Seagulls had progressed to this season’s Final of the 16-club competition having conceded only one goal in wins over Ludgvan, Penzance and Liskeard Athletic, while Wadebridge had beaten champions-in-waiting Millbrook, Carharrack and St Blazey.

The Cup was donated by Truro MP Sir Edward Durning Lawrence over 100 years ago,  and this year’s chosen charity is the Invictus Trust, a Cornwall-based organisation set up recently for teenagers who need mental health support  (more information at www.invictustrust.co.uk).

Mousehole had finished their South West Peninsula League Division 1 West season in fourth place after a remarkable run of form from October, with only three League losses in 24 matches, together with narrow defeats to higher-league opposition in the League Cup semi-final and in a first-ever Senior Cup Final appearance.  The Bridgers had achieved seventh place, falling away after a promising start to the season, and had already been beaten by Mousehole 3-1 at home and 6-0 away.

The kick-off to the delayed Final – eventually scheduled three weeks after the official end of the League season – was preceded by the on-pitch presentation by the Cornwall FA of a Cap to Mousehole’s talented youngster Josh Otto in recognition of his eight appearances for the County’s Under-18s.

The match got off to a high tempo start in front of a sizeable crowd made up mostly of Seagulls supporters, and it was a highly committed Mousehole side – fielding five players from the 5-0 Final win over St Dennis two years ago – who completely dominated the first half.  Jamie Thomson had a goalbound shot deflected for a corner after 2 minutes and Tyler Tonkin volleyed just over from 25 yards in the next attack.  Goalkeeper Rob Rosevear made a great save from Luke Johnson’s fierce drive in the 15th minute, but on 24 the striker opened the scoring with dazzling 50-yard run at speed past two defenders and an unstoppable drive high into the net from just inside the box.

In the five minutes before the interval, Mousehole came close to increasing the lead their play deserved, Paulo Sousa firing wide from 18 yards, Luke Johnson denied again by Rosevear and shortly afterwards sliding a shot across goal and just wide.

The second half opened with Wadebridge fortunate to be only one goal down but showing some belief as Nathan Bonney fired a half-chance over the bar from an angle on 48.  But another spectacular goal saw Mousehole go two up in the 51st minute as Kevin Lawrence – making an impressive return to his former club territory – met a square pass with a first-time side-footed inch-perfect shot into the top left-hand corner from a central position 20 yards out.

Wadebridge created a chance after a breakaway on 56 minutes when 37-goal top scorer Dan Jennings had a shot blocked, and two minutes later Mousehole had a self-inflicted scare when ‘keeper Steve Parker-Billinge’s miskick from a difficult back pass trickled narrowly wide.  At the other end Kevin Lawrence put paid to any chance of a Bridgers’ comeback when he broke through two defenders’ tackles in the left-hand corner of the penalty area and swerved a brilliant right-footed shot just inside the far post for 3-0 on 64 minutes.

And it became 4-0 after 79 minutes with another ‘goal of the season’ contender.  This time Luke Johnson released Tyler Tonkin for a rampaging run down the right and his chipped ball into the middle was volleyed acrobatically into the roof of the net by Jake Andrew from around the penalty spot.  And the striker was on hand again in the first minute of added time, as youngster Louis Graham – with his first touch after coming on as a substitute – moved the ball forward adeptly into space where Andrew won the challenge with the converging defender and goalkeeper to roll the ball into an empty net.

So with the First team’s season ending on a memorable evening, the Reserves gaining promotion as Champions, the newly created Thirds finishing a creditable fourth, the Women’s team achieving a highest ever runners-up spot, and the new Youth teams showing great promise, Mousehole AFC have much to be proud of and, just as importantly, a great deal to look forward to next season and beyond.
