The Seagulls made it four league wins out of four, with Hayden Turner catching the eye with a four goal haul, but this was a complete team performance full of intensity, speed, passing, movement and a gritty determination to keep and win back the ball.

2 mins:  GOAL to Mousehole: Hayden Turner’s penalty just eludes keeper Jordan Duffey’s outstretched dive, the spot kick awarded for a last-ditch foul after Turner and Tallan Mitchell break through the visitors’ offside trap.

The Seagulls’ impressive four-game start to the season has seen them score 23 goals and concede just one.  They now face Saltash United at home this Saturday (26^th), arguably the toughest challenge so far.  The Ashes have won two and drawn one of their three league matches, and have won all three of their Cup matches against higher-league opposition, one in the FA Vase and two in the FA Cup, the latest a 3-1 home win against Step 4 Cirencester on Tuesday.

Mousehole’s first-ever appearance in the national FA Vase competition saw them match and almost defeat one of the top sides in the Step 5 Western League on their own turf, drawing all-round positive credits despite the disappointment of losing in the penalty shoot-out.

How it happened – the key moments:

The Mousehole squad is missing five players, including goalkeeper Cory Harvey following his collision in the abandoned midweek home game against Helston, and injured joint-top scorer Amara Bakayoko.

33 mins:  Exmouth’s direct and forceful play is looking threatening.  Mousehole are finding it difficult to create their own pattern.   Stand-in keeper Dom Angove makes a full-length save from Callum Shipton as he bursts through one-on-one.

Half-time score 0-0:  Resilient Mousehole survive the onslaught without too many more alarms, and are very much still in this tie.

60 mins:  The Seagulls are making their presence felt with more possession as the home side begin to run out of ideas going forward

71 mins Mousehole substitute:  Tallan Mitchell is replaced by Kian Burns, to play wide on the left, with Josh Magin continuing wide on the right.  The Exmouth rearguard is looking vulnerable down the flanks.

75mins Exmouth let-off:  Kian Burns bursts through two strong tackles on the halfway line to create a great chance against the exposed defence, but the Referee stops the move to award Mousehole a free kick rather than play advantage.

81 mins: Mousehole are getting on top – Kieran Toland’s fierce  25-yarder swerves past the post.

Mousehole’s much-anticipated clash with close rivals Helston Athletic ended prematurely in unfortunate fashion with a serious injury to home goalkeeper Cory Harvey following a foul by the visitors’ Matt Buchan.

In the immediate aftermath, Referee Paul Kempen issued a straight red card for a reckless challenge by the striker, followed by a further 30 minutes’ on-pitch attention to the prostrate ‘keeper while awaiting an ambulance. 

Despite Helston vehemently protesting the sending off and pressing for an early resumption to play, the Referee, with the support and advice of Cornwall FA Assessor Steve Lawrence, took his time to assess the situation and, with player health and safety the priority, called the match off at 9.15pm.

2mins, CLOSE for Helston:  Billy Tucker’s 20-yard left-footer hits the top of the bar and goes over.

16mins, CLOSE for Mousehole:  Jude Boyd makes a great run to the byeline but his cut back is fired wide by Hayden Turner from eight yards.

Half-time score 0-0:  A fast and fiercely competitive half, with Mousehole having more of the ball but Helston looking threatening in quick breaks.

52mins, GOAL for Helston:  Two uncharacteristic mistakes at the back give Mark Goldsworthy the chance to drive home with a low shot from 15 yards

65mins, INJURY:  Helston’s Matt Buchan sprints alongside Mousehole captain Billy Curtis after a long bouncing pass through the middle.  Keeper Cory Harvey comes out at speed to jump high to claim the ball. Buchan pushes Curtis into Harvey, who is left injured and motionless on the turf.

Play is held up for 30 minutes, whereupon the Referee abandons the match.

The ambulance arrives later and takes Harvey to hospital, with the diagnosis not as serious as originally thought, and the popular ‘keeper returns home in the early hours of Wednesday – his birthday!

Table-topping Mousehole followed up their 7-0 win at Launceston and 3-0 home success against Porthleven by sweeping aside a young St Austell side with a dominant performance that might well have produced a double-figure scoreline.

Mousehole AFC are delighted to announce the new management and coaching line-up for their Development Team, who play in the St Piran League West at Step 7 of the National League System.

The quartet is: Craig Nicholls, John McCallum, Adrian Ferrell and Matt James. 

Craig Nicholls is a familiar face at Trungle Parc, having been a longstanding goalkeeper for Mousehole, followed by spells at Penzance and Ludgvan, before being appointed manager of the re-formed Marazion AFC, as well as coaching at Penzance Youth.  He has a well-established footballing partnership with John McCallum.

John McCallum had a lengthy association with Penzance AFC, having played in the centenary match against Liverpool in 1992, before going on to captain the club and becoming co-manager.  He also had a playing spell at Mousehole, and was latterly coach at Marazion alongside Craig Nicholls.

Adrian Ferrell has a wealth of playing and management experience with several local clubs.  He featured in goal for Marazion, Porthleven and Gulval, and managed Rosudgeon, Ludgvan and Marazion.  He was also co-manager with Gary Marks at Porthleven in the South Western League, and likewise with John McCallum at Penzance.

Matt James has already spent three seasons at Mousehole, taking responsibility for coaching within the Youth and Women’s teams, as well as playing for the Reserves. He is working towards gaining his UEFA ‘A’ badge during the 2020/21 season, and will lead the coaching of the Development Team alongside John McCallum. 

Mousehole’s Head of Football Adam Fletcher says this is a huge step forward for the club: “Our strategy for the Development team was to give it a new and specific purpose in providing a top-class coaching pathway between the Youth section and the First team.  We’ve now got the perfect combination of successful experience, local knowledge and coaching expertise to bring this to reality – a leadership team of many talents, with a distinct competitive attitude, and a vital piece of the jigsaw.”

John McCallum added:

“We were all very impressed by the overall set-up and the sensible longer-term ambition at Mousehole.  To help achieve this, we are absolutely committed to giving opportunities to any players who are motivated to learn and improve.”    

Adam Fletcher also wanted to record his thanks to a number of others: 

“We’re grateful to all the people who applied for the management position, and very much appreciate their interest in our club.  Also, huge thanks are due to Matt James and goalkeeper Dom Angove (pictured front middle), who have worked hard to ‘hold the fort’ during this transition period.  Dom’s hard work and drive has helped recruit high-quality fresh faces to the playing squad, and that role will continue alongside his ambition to play at the highest level possible..  Last, but not least, we’re really glad that the Reserves’ former assistant manager Mark Trevail has decided to remain involved, which shows his lifetime’s dedication to the club.”

Mousehole Women are back in training and looking to recruit new players to both their Senior and Under-16s squads.

As the club’s ‘Pathway’ policy develops, several of the current Under-16 Girls are ready to graduate to the senior Women’s squad, who are one of the high-flying teams in the Cornwall Women’s Football League.

Long-standing manager Dawn Bateman says that the players are really enjoying getting back to training: 

“We are currently training at Trungle Parc on Sunday mornings from 11.00 to 12.00. 

New players across the age range are most welcome – they are sure to be impressed by our superb facilities and modern coaching methods. 

We can offer fantastic opportunities to:

• Over 16s, and those who will reach the age of 16 during the 2020/21 season;
• 14-16s, to replace the U16s who are set to progress to the senior side.

We would also like to hear from any younger girls who have the potential to progress through the age groups.

Mousehole AFC have continued their summer recruitment campaign with the signing of local player Josh Magin.

Josh Magin is described as an athletic and speedy wide player with lots of natural ability, who also has the versatility to play more centrally.  He is expected to flourish under the guidance of manager Jake Ash, coach Andy Graham and fitness expert Gareth O’Neill, as the club continues to offer opportunities to local players with as-yet untapped potential.

The 29-year old has been playing for his home-town club St Ives Town in the St Piran League West at Step 7.  He was also a member of the excellent 2017/18 Ludgvan team that narrowly finished runners-up in their first season after promotion to the SWPL West Division.

Josh Magin is a qualified and experienced beach lifeguard, so his joining-up with Mousehole will add to the club’s long-standing association with the RNLI.

Manager Jake Ash has now made four recent additions to his squad, with this latest arrival coming shortly after the signing of Kian Burns from Camelford, Jude Boyd from Plymouth Argyle, and Sean Roberts formerly of Ludgvan AFC.

With an eye on the possible start of the 2020/21 campaign later in the year, Mousehole are stepping up their pre-season programme for the combined First Team and Development Squads.  As the club’s progressive coaching programme continues to grow in reputation and interest, more signings are likely over the coming weeks.
