SEAGULLS BACK TO WINNING WAYS IN TOUGH ENCOUNTER

MOUSEHOLE 2-1 BODMIN TOWN

(Amara Bakayoko, Hayden Turner)

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST

SATURDAY 3RD OCTOBER 2020

AT TRUNGLE PARC

Football was the winner at a windswept Trungle Parc as Mousehole showed great character to resist Bodmin’s tactics and execute their own game plan to record a third consecutive success against the League’s most trophy-laden club.

How it happened – the key moments:

5 minutes:  Close for Mousehole – Amara Bakayoko, back after  three-week injury lay-off, fires a fierce angled shot from the left just past the far post

9 minutes:  Close for Bodmin – Chris Reski’s goalbound shot from 15 yards is blocked for  corner.  The corner is marginally too high for the two onrushing central defenders closing in on goal

10 minutes:  GOAL for Mousehole – Amara Bakayoko is back on the goal trail, beating the offside trap through the middle to drive the ball left-footed inside the post

11 minutes:  GOAL for Bodmin – The visitors are gifted an immediate equaliser as Martin Watts’ characteristic left-footed free kick from 25 yards is driven straight at Cory Harvey, but the Seagulls’ keeper lets the ball bounce off his chest and Stuart Bowker heads in an easy chance from close range

15 minutes:  Close for Mousehole – Amara Bakayoko’s back-heel is cleared off the line after Hayden Turner opens up the defence with  a great run and cross on the right

24 minutes:  Close for Bodmin – Cory Harvey makes amends for his earlier lapse by grasping a header destined for the top corner

25 minutes:  Close for Mousehole – Mark Richards brings the ball forward at speed from the back and releases Hayden Turner, but the striker fires wide of the near post

32 minutes:  Close for Mousehole – Hayden Turner scoops over from six yards as Tallan Mitchell creates the chance from the byeline on the left

45 minutes:  Close for Bodmin – Dan Jennings’ pace gives him a half-chance but he shoots wide of the far post

Half-time: Mousehole 1-1 Bodmin.  The wind is causing passes to be over-hit.  Mousehole have more of the ball and look more likely to score, but Bodmin are determined to break up the play, with ever-increasing fouls, dissent and yellow cards.

52 minutes:  close for Mousehole – keeper Ollie Chenoweth makes an alert save at the far post from Amara Bakayoko’s low cross

57minutes:  Mousehole again close – Amara Bakayoko outpaces the defence from the halfway line but shoots wide from 15 yards

60 minutes:  Mousehole substitute:  Steve Burt is replaced in midfield by Andy Elcock

Little is seen of Bodmin as an attacking force, but the tackles are certainly hotting up.  Mousehole are continuing to play their passing brand of football and are now dominating.

63 minutes:  Close for Mousehole – Kieran Toland is fractionally wide with a low 20-yard drive

66 minutes:  Close again – Josh Magin dispossesses last-man Watts but his first-time shot goes past the post

67 minutes:  Closer still – Andy Elcock hits the top of the crossbar from 18 yards after a perfect lay-off by Kieran Toland

68 minutes:  GOAL for Mousehole – Hayden Turner starts and finishes a thrilling passage of play, bursting clear on the right to put in a low cross, with Tallan Mitchell and Josh Magin both having shots cleared off the line.  The ball is recycled on the left hand side where Amara Bakayoko’s pin-point cross is met with a superb leap and header from 8 yards by The Seagulls’ top-scorer.  The hugely-celebrated goal is a merited reward for Mousehole’s refusal to be knocked out of their stride.

80 minutes:  Close for Mousehole – Kieran Toland nearly gets the third goal but keeper Chenoweth does well with the block

82 minutes:  Mousehole substitute – Tallan Mitchell is replaced in midfield by Max Gilbert

85 minutes:  Mousehole substitute – Josh Magin is replaced by Kian Burns

90+5:  Full time:  Mousehole 2-1 Bodmin Town.  A niggly game is finally over, with Mousehole glad to get the three points after home defeat to Saltash the previous week, but also taking great credit for the performance in difficult circumstances.

Mousehole:  Cory Harvey, Billy Curtis (captain), Mark Richards, Jamie Devine, Paulo Sousa, Steve Burt*, Tallan Mitchell*, Kieran Toland, Josh Magin*, Hayden Turner, Amara Bakayoko

SEAGULLS NARROWLY LOSE OUT AS ASHES HALT WINNING RUN

MOUSEHOLE 1-2 SALTASH UNITED

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST

SATURDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER 2020

AT TRUNGLE PARC

Mousehole’s maximum-points start to the season came to an end as they were edged out in a hard-fought encounter against arguably the best team they have faced so far.  The Seagulls had convincingly won all four of their League matches with an aggregate score of 23 goals against one, but The Ashes had won six of their opening seven games, including three FA Cup victories against higher-league opposition.

How it happened – the key moments:

12 minutes – Close for Mousehole:  Josh Magin fashions a chance for himself with a run from the right, but having brought the ball on to his left foot and with only keeper Ryan Rickard to beat, the wingman fires over the bar from 8 yards

39 minutes – GOAL FOR MOUSEHOLE:  KIERAN TOLAND (sponsored by RDR Estates) runs across the defence line to touch home Josh Magin’s perfect low cross to the near post for a lead they have worked really hard for.

41 minutes – Close for Mousehole:  Hayden Turner just loses out in a one-on-one race with keeper Rickard

45+3 minutes – GOAL FOR SALTASH:  With seconds remaining, Mousehole squander their lead, an unforced error on halfway giving the visitors the chance to counter-attack with an immediate ball down the right and a quick inside pass leaving BEN HOLTER free on six yards, and his shot squirms under Corey Harvey for an equaliser: their only threat in the first half and a potential psychological advantage at the interval.

Half-time score:  1-1

47 minutes – close for Saltash:  Sam Farrant’s angled shot skims along the goal-line and millimetres wide.

50 minutes – close again for Saltash:  The visitors are making a strong start to the second half.  Cory Harvey just about keeps out Reece Thomson’s effort and the resulting corner flashes past the far post, needing only a touch from the Ashes’ big defenders.

59 minutes – GOAL FOR SALTASH:  REECE THOMSON gives the visitors a 2-1 lead, turning his marker easily on the edge of the box and firing a right-footer low into the corner past Cory Harvey’s dive, a goal that had been looking likely since the resumption.

62 minutes – Two Mousehole substitutions:  Josh Magin replaced by Kian Burns, and Jude Boyd by new signing Max Gilbert

66 minutes – Close for Saltash:  Reece Tomson loses out to Cory Harvey in a one-on-one chase

71 minutes – Mousehole substitute:  Steve Burt is replaced by Paulo Sousa

75 minutes – Pattern of play:  Saltash are resolutely defending their lead with a five-man back line and energetic tracking-back, denying Mousehole space in the final third;  The Seagulls are being forced to play across the pitch; keeper Rickard is being well protected and has nothing serious to deal with.

87 minutes – Chance for Mousehole:  patient play on the left gives Paulo Sousa a clear sight of goal but he scuffs wide from 10 yards with his usually reliable left foot

90+4 – Full-time whistle and Saltash celebrate their 2-1 win with obvious delight.

Mousehole:  Cory Harvey, Billy Curtis (captain), Mark Richards, Jamie Devine, Josh Otto, Steve Burt*, Tallan Mitchell, Kieran Toland, Josh Magin*, Hayden Turner, Jude Boyd*.

*Players substituted: Steve Burt by Paulo Sousa, Josh Magin by Kian Burns, and Jude Boyd by Max Gilbert

Unused substitutes:  Tom Hands, Dom Angove (GK)

Officials:  Matthew Carney (Referee), with Darren Winkworth & Derek Hughes (Assistants)

Attendance: 138

Mousehole are in 4th place in the early League table, and will be looking to get back on track this Saturday (3rd October) with the visit of Bodmin Town (3pm), who face bottom club Launceston at home on Wednesday.  Newquay, Saltash and new leaders Camelford are now the only unbeaten teams, with the latter two facing each other in midweek before The Ashes’ home FA Cup Second Qualifying Round tie against Southern League Sholing on Saturday.

Forthcoming fixtures:

This Saturday, 3rd October: HOME v Bodmin Town 3pm

Tuesday 6th October: Away v Wendron United 7.30pm

Saturday 10th October: Away  v Porthleven 3pm

Tuesday 13th October:  HOME v Godolphin Atlantic 7.30pm.

MAX GILBERT JOINS MOUSEHOLE’S HIGH-FLYING SQUAD

Mousehole have signed talented young midfielder Max Gilbert ahead of their mouth-watering home match against Saltash United tomorrow (Saturday 26th September).

The 20-year old has been a regular feature and star performer in Bodmin Town’s line-up, with a knack of scoring goals from midfield.

The nephew of Bodmin manager Darren Gilbert, he has also represented Cornwall Youth and was selected for the Kernow FA squad for this year’s CONIFA World Cup.

Football Director Adam Fletcher explained:  “Max has been on our radar for a long time now.  He is well known to Jake (Mousehole’s Manager Jake Ash), who played with him at Bodmin, as well as First Team coach Andy Graham, who coached him for Cornwall Youth and Kernow FA..  Both speak very highly of him.  Max can play as a 4/8/10 and we’re looking into the possibility of playing him as a 9, so he adds lots of quality and depth to the squad!”

Gilbert is expected to be available for selection for the intriguing encounter with Saltash United at Trungle Parc (kick off 3pm).  Mousehole have won all four of their opening league matches, scoring 23 goals and conceding just one in the process.  Similarly, The Ashes have made an unbeaten 7-game start, including wins in the FA Cup and FA Vase against higher-league opposition.

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST

TUESDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER 2020

AT TRUNGLE PARC

The Seagulls made it four league wins out of four, with Hayden Turner catching the eye with a four goal haul, but this was a complete team performance full of intensity, speed, passing, movement and a gritty determination to keep and win back the ball.

How it happened – the key moments:

2 mins:  GOAL to Mousehole: Hayden Turner’s penalty just eludes keeper Jordan Duffey’s outstretched dive, the spot kick awarded for a last-ditch foul after Turner and Tallan Mitchell break through the visitors’ offside trap.

11mins:  Close – Tallan Mitchell shoots wide from 8 yards after a scintillating right-sided move and Hayden Turner’s low cut-back

20 mins: Save – Seagulls’ keeper Dom Angove at the other end goes full length to palm a strong header from Sam Cooper round the post following a corner

22 mins:  GOAL to Mousehole, now 2-0:  A rare goal for centre back Mark Richards as he prods home from inside the six yard box after a well-worked short corner on the left.

23 mins:  Another GOAL, now 3-0:  Hayden Turner accelerates between the two centre backs from 40 yards out, rounds the advancing keeper and slots into the empty net

40 mins:  GOAL, 4-0:  Turner again, this time latches on to a lofted pass for a one-on-one with Duffey and strokes the ball low into the far corner for a well-earned hat-trick

43 mins:  Save – Dom Angove is called into action with a flying save from a fierce 10-yard shot by left back Jack Tribble as St Blazey venture upfield

44 mins:  Close – Jude Boyd nearly opens his account for the season as he shows great speed to fashion a chance down the middle, but lobs just over the bar as the keeper comes out

Half-time:  Mousehole 4-0 St Blazey

48 mins:  GOAL, 5-0:  Tallan Mitchell drives into the top corner from the centre of the box as Kieran Toland and Josh Magin skilfully open up the defence on the right hand side

57 mins:  Close – Jude Boyd’s run and shot is matched by Jordan Duffey who tips it over the bar

59 mins:  Close again – Duffey goes full length to keep out Hayden Turner’s 18-yard left-footer

60 mins:  Close once more – Kieran Toland is eager to get in on the goal action and his dipping swerving shot just clears the crossbar

62 mins:  GOAL, 6-0:  Hayden Turner’s timing, movement and pace earn  him an opening past the covering defender and his low drive just inside the far post from 15 yards brings him his fourth goal on the night

63 mins:  Mousehole substitution – Josh Magin is replaced by Kian Burns

69 mins: Mousehole substitution – Hayden Turner is replaced by Gerens James

76 mins:  Mousehole substitution – Jude Boyd is replaced by Tom Hands, with Josh Otto moving from left back to right wing

SUPERB SEAGULLS SO CLOSE TO VASE SHOCK AGAINST HIGHER LEAGUE OPPOSITION

EXMOUTH TOWN 0-0 MOUSEHOLE (4-3 ON PENALTIES)

FA VASE FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND

SATURDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER 2020

AT SOUTHERN ROAD

Mousehole’s first-ever appearance in the national FA Vase competition saw them match and almost defeat one of the top sides in the Step 5 Western League on their own turf, drawing all-round positive credits despite the disappointment of losing in the penalty shoot-out.

How it happened – the key moments:

The Mousehole squad is missing five players, including goalkeeper Cory Harvey following his collision in the abandoned midweek home game against Helston, and injured joint-top scorer Amara Bakayoko.

33 mins:  Exmouth’s direct and forceful play is looking threatening.  Mousehole are finding it difficult to create their own pattern.   Stand-in keeper Dom Angove makes a full-length save from Callum Shipton as he bursts through one-on-one.

Half-time score 0-0:  Resilient Mousehole survive the onslaught without too many more alarms, and are very much still in this tie.

60 mins:  The Seagulls are making their presence felt with more possession as the home side begin to run out of ideas going forward

71 mins Mousehole substitute:  Tallan Mitchell is replaced by Kian Burns, to play wide on the left, with Josh Magin continuing wide on the right.  The Exmouth rearguard is looking vulnerable down the flanks.

75mins Exmouth let-off:  Kian Burns bursts through two strong tackles on the halfway line to create a great chance against the exposed defence, but the Referee stops the move to award Mousehole a free kick rather than play advantage.

80 mins:  Mousehole substitute:  Tom Hands is replaced by Josh Otto on the right side of defence, with Billy Curtis moving across to the left

81 mins: Mousehole are getting on top – Kieran Toland’s fierce  25-yarder swerves past the post.

84 mins:  Mousehole are within millimetres of taking the lead as Josh Magin’s angled shot hits the base of the far post and spins out for a goal kick.

87 mins:  Josh Magin close again, this time from a central position as his 25 yard shot is destined for the corner but home keeper Robbie Powell rescues his side with a flying save to push the ball round the post

90 mins:  Exmouth breakaway – Jordan Harris has a great chance but hurriedly scuffs his shot straight at Dom Angove, who has been relatively untroubled in the second half.

90+5 mins:  Mousehole have had a great last 15 minutes and will have wished for more minutes, but the Referee blows for full-time.

Full-time score:  0-0.  No extra time, so it’s straight to penalties.

Exmouth 0-1 Mousehole:  Kian Burns scores

1-1 Exmouth captain Max Gillard scores

1-2 Hayden Turner for Mousehole

2-2 Mark Lever for Exmouth

2-3 Jamie Devine for Mousehole

3-3 Jordan Harris for Exmouth

Josh Otto’s penalty is brilliantly saved by Robbie Powell.  Still 3-3, but advantage Exmouth.

4-3 to Exmouth as Aarron Denny converts

Kieran Toland must score to keep the Seagulls in it, but Powell pulls off another great save

Result:  Exmouth Town 4-3 Mousehole, on penalties.

Exmouth’s celebrations are tinged with relief and keeper Robbie Powell is rightly the centre of attention.  The Mousehole squad is sportingly applauded off the pitch by the home faithful – they know they’ve been in a match!

Mousehole:  Dom Angove, Billy Curtis (captain), Mark Richards, Jamie Devine, Tom Hands*, Tallan Mitchell*, Kieran Toland, Steve Burt, Josh Magin, Hayden Turner, Jude Boyd

*Used substitutes:  Kian Burns for Tallan Mitchell; Josh Otto for Tom Hands

Unused substitutes:  Paulo Sousa, Charlie Wills, Jake Ash

Despite the result, a momentous occasion for the club both on and off the field, the major talking point being that The Seagulls, far from being underdogs, have proved they can match and do well in the league above, if and when promotion beckons.

Back to league action now with three consecutive games at Trungle Parc, with a chance to extend their 100% league record:

This Tuesday, 22nd September, Home v St Blazey, 7.30pm

Next Saturday, 26th September, Home v Saltash United, 3pm The Saturday after, 3rd October, Home v Bodmin Town, 3pm

FA VASE: MOUSEHOLE’S “ROAD TO WEMBLEY” STARTS AT EXMOUTH ON SATURDAY

Mousehole AFC will create history this Saturday when they play their first-ever game in the FA Vase.

The national non-league competition, sponsored by Buildbase, involves clubs at Steps 5 to 7 of the National League System, whose grounds meet the FA’s standards.  The Final is held at the prestigious Wembley Stadium towards the end of the season.

A total of 442 clubs will be in action this weekend, hoping to make progress, pick up some valuable prize money, and make a name for themselves in the later stages of the competition.

With the early stages regionalised, Step 6 Mousehole nevertheless face a big challenge in the First Qualifying Round with an away tie at Step 5 Exmouth Town, one of the top clubs in the Western Premier League.  Kick off at Southern Road (EX8 3EE) is at 3pm, with the match decided by penalties if the scores are level at full time.

The winners of Exmouth v Mousehole have been drawn away in the Second Qualifying Round on 10th October to mid-Dorset side Sherborne Town, who play in the Western League First Division, on a par with Mousehole.  The First Round Proper is on 31st October.

Manager Jake Ash is no stranger to the FA Vase competition.  He was a member of the Truro City team which, playing at Step 6 at the time, created its own history in 2006/07 by progressing all the way to the Wembley Final and winning the trophy – the lowest-placed team to have done so, and in front of the competition’s record crowd of 36,232.

“I think everyone involved in the FA Vase gets a feel for how special it is – however far you go.  Just the chance to go and play different opposition and test yourself outside our small little bubble down here is an exciting prospect”, said the Seagulls’ boss.

“We probably couldn’t have been handed a tougher test than Exmouth, who I’m told haven’t lost a home league game for 22 months. But our own team are in a brilliant place at the minute and I know they will be as excited by the challenge as I am.  I have no doubt if they play to the level they are capable of we will have a really good chance.”

Chairman Deryk Heywood added: “This will be a great moment for Mousehole.  I am really proud to be part of this progressive club and its Academy.  It shows how far we have come, from village football to the national stage.  It’s an incredible story behind what has happened in the last five years.  A hard-working Committee, ambitious planning, great characters, people with loyalty, creativity and integrity, and a passion for success matched both on and off the field.”

“It would be amazing to win at Exmouth and get a momentum going.  Hopefully the whole of the County would get behind us, just like happened to Truro City in 2007/08.  Anyway, we’re on our way to Wembley – just the nine rounds to go!”.

Footnotes:

  • Mousehole are the most westerly club ever to enter the FA Vase
  • Exmouth lost their two opening games this season, a 2-0 league defeat at Plymouth Parkway and a 2-0 home FA Cup defeat last Saturday against Step 4 Melksham Town of the Southern League, but then had a 4-1 home league win against Tavistock  in midweek.
  • Mousehole have a 100% record this season, three consecutive league wins against Launceston (A), Porthleven (H) and St Austell (A) producing 17 goals scored with one conceded.
  • The Seagulls’ last fixture at home against Helston Athletic in midweek was abandoned after a serious injury to goalkeeper Cory Harvey, with 64 minutes played and Helston leading 1-0.

REFEREE ABANDONS HELSTON MATCH AFTER SERIOUS INJURY TO SEAGULLS’ KEEPER

MOUSEHOLE A-A HELSTON ATHLETIC

ABANDONED WITH 65 MINUTES PLAYED

SOUTH WEST PENINSULAR LEAGUE PREMIER WEST

TUESDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER 2020

AT TRUNGLE PARC

Mousehole’s much-anticipated clash with close rivals Helston Athletic ended prematurely in unfortunate fashion with a serious injury to home goalkeeper Cory Harvey following a foul by the visitors’ Matt Buchan.

In the immediate aftermath, Referee Paul Kempen issued a straight red card for a reckless challenge by the striker, followed by a further 30 minutes’ on-pitch attention to the prostrate ‘keeper while awaiting an ambulance.

Despite Helston vehemently protesting the sending off and pressing for an early resumption to play, the Referee, with the support and advice of Cornwall FA Assessor Steve Lawrence, took his time to assess the situation and, with player health and safety the priority, called the match off at 9.15pm.

The key moments:

2mins, CLOSE for Helston:  Billy Tucker’s 20-yard left-footer hits the top of the bar and goes over.

16mins, CLOSE for Mousehole:  Jude Boyd makes a great run to the byeline but his cut back is fired wide by Hayden Turner from eight yards.

Half-time score 0-0:  A fast and fiercely competitive half, with Mousehole having more of the ball but Helston looking threatening in quick breaks.

52mins, GOAL for Helston:  Two uncharacteristic mistakes at the back give Mark Goldsworthy the chance to drive home with a low shot from 15 yards

65mins, INJURY:  Helston’s Matt Buchan sprints alongside Mousehole captain Billy Curtis after a long bouncing pass through the middle.  Keeper Cory Harvey comes out at speed to jump high to claim the ball. Buchan pushes Curtis into Harvey, who is left injured and motionless on the turf.

67mins, RED CARD for Helston’s Matt Buchan for the challenge.

Play is held up for 30 minutes, whereupon the Referee abandons the match.

The ambulance arrives later and takes Harvey to hospital, with the diagnosis not as serious as originally thought, and the popular ‘keeper returns home in the early hours of Wednesday – his birthday!

Mousehole starting X1:  Cory Harvey, Billy Curtis (captain), Mark Richards, Jamie Devine, Paulo Sousa, Steve Burt, Kieran Toland, Tallan Mitchell, Kian Burns, Hayden Turner, Jude Boyd.

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST

SATURDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER 2020

AT POLTAIR PARC

Table-topping Mousehole followed up their 7-0 win at Launceston and 3-0 home success against Porthleven by sweeping aside a young St Austell side with a dominant performance that might well have produced a double-figure scoreline.

How it happened – the key moments:

1min, GOAL to St Austell:  An unforced error on the edge of the penalty area presents Chris Kilbey with a gift, and he side-foots into an unguarded net from 20 yards.

7mins, GOAL to Mousehole:  Tallan Mitchell brings down a lofted forward pass with superb control and lobs over keeper Jason Chapman from 15 yards for an early equaliser.

12mins, GOAL, St Austell 1-2 Mousehole:  Hayden Turner scores against his former club to put The Seagulls in the lead, turning to shoot home from 8 yards after Kieran Toland’s cross-shot is blocked in front of goal.

25mins, GOAL, St Austell 1-3 Mousehole:  Hayden Turner scores from the penalty spot after Tallan Mitchell’s twisting run into the area is halted with a foul.

37mins, GOAL, St Austell 1-4 Mousehole:  Amara Bakayoko breaks up a St Austell attack by pressing and winning the ball midway in his own half, skips past the defender on the halfway line and ends a 70-yard sprint with a fierce left-foot drive into the corner of the net.

44mins, GOAL, St Austell 1-5 Mousehole:  The Seagulls show no let-up in their attacking intentions but have a touch of luck on their side as Tallan Mitchell’s 25-yard right-footed attempt bounces awkwardly past Chapman.

58mins, SUBSTITUTE for Mousehole:  Jude Boyd is replaced by Kian Burns

76mins, SUBSTITUTE for Mousehole:  Steve Burt is replaced by Josh Magin.

The Seagulls’ 100% record from their first three matches, with 16 goals scored and 1 conceded, leaves them as league leaders, sharing the nine points with Dobwalls.

QUALITY GOALS SEE MOUSEHOLE CONTINUE BRIGHT START TO SEASON

Mousehole 3-0 Porthleven

(Kieran Toland, Steve Burt, Paulo Sousa)

South West Peninsula League, Premier West

Tuesday 8th September 2020

At Trungle Parc

The Seagulls claimed a second good win in four days to maintain their leading position in the early league table, three special strikes in 14 first half minutes seeing off the visitors’ determined resistance.

How it happened – the key moments:
